Introduced in March, 1990 along with another higher spec EOS body of Canon EOS-10sQD. Basically, you can referred the camera as the upgrade of the EOS750/EOS850 where by the time the EOS700 was introduced, both the bodies have already being discontinued. Similarly, the design of the camera was, like the EOS750/EOS850 more tuned for the general consumers market. However, although the camera seemingly shares many similarities with the earlier bodies, it is actually a newer generation of the EOS models, where it encompasses many advance features in particular it uses the same 2nd generation AF system used in the Canon EOS 630 which was far superior to the earlier EOS750/850. Incidentally, Canon also announced retirement of both first generation EOS650 and EOS620 after the EOS10/EOS700 were introduced. One of the eye catching feature of this camera was its unique reversible control dial which switches the camera from Program Image Control modes to other exposure modes. It was quite short lived and lasted only a year in the market.

One of the highlights of the EOS700 was actually it came with a very interesting companion EF zoom lense, EF 35-80mm f/4~5.6. Unlike other EF zoom, this was perhaps the world's first motorized AF power-zoom with an internal focusing at this zoom range (control via 2 buttons on top/side of the EF power zoom). The lense omitted adoption of a conventional zoom design of a zoom ring and zoom control was motorized with an internal focusing system. The EOS 700 has a very heavy plasticy feel. In fact, this EF 35-80mm f/4~5.6 Power-Zoom was probably the first EF zoom that uses polycarbonated material lense mount design. But one immediate benefit of the virtual 100% polycarbonated body structure is its lightweight. Since its main targeted audience are weekend casual family users who may hardly be using the camera for heavy duty photographic usage or even may not be be frequently changing lenses, so it is still quite all right. Although there was not specific borderline to judge its durability of the lens mount with such technical configuration but its overall design and features provided were within the scope of meeting its main objective of providing a good, economical SLR for wide consumer market.

Another feature of the EOS 700 was its adoption of a dial control system instead of confusing all button LCD controls which is far easier to understand and manipulates even for a first time SLR user. The camera's mode dial has two faces: One face shows icons for eight Programmed Image Control modes while the other face functions as an Intelligent dial to set shutter speed-priority AE, program AE, and bulb. The dial can be detached and flipped over for reattachment to the camera. Further, the QD version of the camera has a Quartz Date Imprint Function built-in. The EOS 700QD can imprint the current date in four different formats or be turned off completely.

The innovative Reversible Selector Dial makes the EOS 700 particularly easy to use. By selecting the configuration you want, you can set up the camera to take full advantage of the Programmed Image Control features. Or, by flipping the dial over, you can shoot using shutter-priority operation. In other words, it lets you select the effects you want.

As mentioned earlier, the 2nd generation of the AF SYSTEM employed in the EOS700 provides a faster, more positive operation in enabling it can aid the photographer catches all possible photographic activities, which includes action photography which is so famous with Canon's AF technology. With the use of a lens-integral design of the EOS AF system, the EOS 700 can enable you focuses on your subject quickly and accurately. The improved AF speed is a big plus on the EOS 700. During operation, you can simply select the main element in your picture and press the shutter button halfway, the power zoom lense will respond instantly. The camera even has a built-in beep alert lets you know when you can trip the shutter release and take the picture. The AF system provides two operation control in either one-shot/AI Servo in an automatic AF changeover control or continuous shootings with AF predictive control:

One Shot/Al Servo Automatic Changeover With the EOS 700, control over the photographic situation can be fully automatic. The smart AF system employs can detect moving subjects and compensate for them if necessary by operating in AI Servo. Subjects that aren't moving will be handled in the One-shot mode. In this mode, AF locks once the image is sharply in focus, allowing you to recompose the scene and place your subject off to the side if you want, In either case, you don't have to worry about doing a thing, since the whole system is automatic.

Predictive Autofocus (Al Servo) One of the area where the second generation Canon AF technology is its improved predictive focusing control which was less desirable with the earlier bodies such as EOS750/EOS850. Despite the camera is still essentially an amateur model, It makes tough AF shooting conditions be easier to operate with the EOS 700. Predictive Autofocus is a special system that automatically tracks Last action as it's coming toward you or going away by continually adjusting focus as the subject moves. And Predictive Autofocus uses this information to determine exactly where the subject will be at the actual instant you take the picture. The entire process is totally automatic which provides more positive results with sharp photographs, even of rapidly moving subjects.

Other than focusing, another main obstacle of good photography with general users is exposure control and the EOS700 has this section well covered too, it was called "Programmed Image Control" by Canon. Using the Reversible Selector Dial can makes photography an easier process and simpler with higher degree of desirable results.

All you ever need is to just rotate the dial to the correct program for your shooting situation. The EOS 700 Programmed Image Control system will automatically select the best shutter speed, aperture value, AF mode and film winding mode. You get the results you want without worrying about what to do and there are special programs help you select the right settings for separate shooting situations. And since the camera handles everything automatically, all you do is select the program you need and start shooting and generally, you should get more than adequate results.

Landscapes

The Landscape setting is perfect for a variety of outdoor shots. It's a smart choice for your vacation photographs, for example. It uses the One-shot AF mode, and the camera automatically selects a small aperture, so you get enough depth of field to ensure that the entire scene is sharply in focus.

Portraits

When you are shooting portraits, you want interest centered on the person's face. In the Portrait mode, the camera selects a large aperture. This results in a relatively shallow depth of field, emphasizing your subject. And since the One-shot mode is also chosen, once the camera completes AF, you can recompose the scene the way you want.

Deep Focus

This innovative special program is perfect for when you want things various distances from the camera all to be in focus. Working with the wide-angle end of a zoom lens, the camera selects a small aperture then automatically adjusts the 1110CUS location at a halfway point to ensure that both the main subject and background are sharply in focus.

Indoor

A general application program designed for parties or any other activity that happens indoors. Use it for well-balanced photographs with bright backgrounds. if you want to shoot with available light, the camera automatically selects the highest shutter speed possible to prevent camera shake.

Macro & Close-up

In the Close-up mode, the EOS 700 uses partial metering for precise exposure control. An appropriate aperture and shutter speed are set for optimum results.

Stop Action

Shooting sports or other fast-moving activities sometimes requires special settings. But the 1105 700 does it automatically. In the Stop Action mode, the AF system works with Focus Prediction. The camera also selects die fastest shutter speed for tight conditions to make sure you keep up with all the action.

Flowing

Sometimes you want to give moving objects the "look" of being in motion by intentionally blurring the background. The Flowing mode automatically chooses a slow shutter speed. By panning the camera along with the moving subject as you shoot, the subject itself is kept sharp but die background becomes a blur, giving a direct visual indication of motion.

Slow-sync/Fill-in Flash

With conventional flash photography, the main subject in the foreground can be correctly exposed by the flash illumination but the background can be too dark. By using the Slow-sync mode, the camera automatically chooses a slow shutter speed. This allows the background to be correctly exposed as well. Even in bright daylight, there are times when the subject's face might be covered by a shadow. Fill-in flash solves this by firing automatically, ensuring that the main subject is correctly illuminated.

The sophisticated Depth-of Field AE mode lets you decide what the scene's "zone of focus" should include. By selecting the closest element to be in focus then the element farthest away that is to he in focus, you instruct the camera to automatically determine the optimum shutter speed and aperture value for that situation. It also selects the best focusing distance to make sure everything is razor sharp.

The Intelligent Program AE mode works like a conventional auto exposure program mode by automatically selecting the appropriate aperture value and shutter speed for each shooting situation. But the EOS system also further "fine-adjusts" this decision to best fit the tens being used or to suit die focal length of a zoom lens.

Programmed AE Plus Depth of Field AE When it was introduced, among the entry level EOS bodies, the EOS 700 provides the most advanced Automatic Exposure system available at the time of its introduction. In order to respond instantly to lighting conditions, the sophisticated 6-zone Evaluative Metering system compares lighting values in various areas of the scene to ensure the best possible exposure. For more responsive light metering in some Programmed Image Control settings, the camera will select partial or center-weighted average metering. This EOS camera offers quite a flexible way in automatic operation. By choosing the Shutter Priority AE side of the Reversible Selector Dial, you can explore your sense of creativity. You can select a fast shutter speed for action shots or slower speeds for more dramatic effects. The EOS 700 automatically chooses the correct aperture values to ensure correct exposure.

Using Shutter-priority AE gives you fully automatic operation plus a selection of shutter speeds, from a bulb setting up to 1/2000 second - fast enough to stop droplets of falling water. Faster shutter speeds also eliminate any problems with camera shake. Using slow shutter speeds lets you do available light photography even in dim conditions. You can also cream dramatic effects at slow shutter speeds.

A built-in Retractable Flash delivers a ready light whenever you need it You've always got the light you need - even when you don't know you need it. The EOS 700 features a built-in flash that pops up automatically when the light meter detects insufficient light. After the flash fires, it retracts automatically. The flash even activates when the camera detects tricky backlit situations. Thus the main subject in the foreground will be correctly exposed, without your worrying about how to handle the back lighting. There's a non-flash mode for creative effects when doing available fight photography. And flash recycle time is much faster - only 2 seconds. So you don't have to wait long between flash shots.

Pre-wind Film Loading The camera uses the same film preqind system as in the EOS750/850. Film loading is entirely automatic at an rate of approx. 1.2 fps.. After you position the film and close the back cover, the film transport system automatically advances the film to the end of the roll then stops. After each frame is "posed, the transport system then returns it into the cassette. This way, if you accidentally open the camera, the shots you've taken will be safely inside the cassette.

A dedicated special Power Zoom Lense has been designed to take advantage of the EOS 700's convenient operating features. The compact EF 35-80 mm f4~5.6 power zoom lens features a sophisticated ergonomic design that adds easy operation enjoyment, thanks to the large power zoom buttons that control the quick and responsive zooming mechanism.

Making use of the manual focusing ring, you can use the Focus Preset mode for subjects that may be difficult for the camera to focus on. If that is not enough, there is a host of system lenses that can easily fill your appetite in choices and varieties with the EF Lens System - There's a complete selection of wide-angle lenses, telephotos and. zoom lenses, from the 15 mm fisheye lens to the 600 mm super telephoto.

Canon's EF lenses with Ultrasonic Motors (USM) are widely recognized as superior in terms of AF speed and accuracy. These newest EOS USM lenses are astonishingly quick and virtually silent. And now they are also priced very affordably. A particularly attractive choice is the 100-300 mm telephoto zoom lens to supplement the companion zoom of 35-80mm.
