Tragically, what human activity is already doing-not by deliberate attack of course but through over crowding of coastal areas and unsustained economic development. These waters are under the greatest environmental stress. The majority of nutrients, sediments pathogens, persistent toxins, and thermal pollution, all come from land based sources an estimated 80 to 90 percent, of the material dumped at sea comes from coastal dredging. Countries have also used the deep ocean to dispose the military waste and nuclear powered submarines. Although the dumping of nuclear and other highly toxic waste at sea is prohibited, governments continue to consider the deep oceans for the disposal of hazardous wastes.
