Contents : Some types of marine pollution have abated, as has the explotation of some marine mammals. But the major treaties have largely overlooked the less charismatic but more pervasive issues of land, based sources of pollution, habitat destruction, and over fishing, even in terms of setting standards. Without global agreements to address these critical issues, the broader goal of protecting earth's greatest commons will be difficult, if not impossible, to achieve.
