Part III - various Nikon Compact Camera Models 1995-1999
The Nikon Zoom 310 AF QD has quite a confusing colour choices. The metallic silver as well as grayish-green used a well stealth plastic casing with the pure gray model has a more apparent feel of plastic. The 1995 model (center picture) has a different appearance from earlier ones. The Nikon 38-70mm zoom also has a close focus function and it came with a standard built-in panorama format feature choice (the panorama logo printed at the bottom right hand side indicated this function). I am not sure what was the aperture of the lense and its actual close focus distance it permits but here is a very good review prepared by Edwin (current maintainer of Nikon Links.com where you can find out more with this model.

The odd introduction of the EF-100 back in 1993 continued with this 1995 model, Nikon EF-200 renamed "Nice-Touch 3" for US market. Two features distinguish it from the original EF-100. The lense was now a wideangle 31mm but with a slower maximum aperture at f/5.6 and it has a much stylist look exterior. It remained as a entry level Nikon compact model. At the same time, a QD version of the Nikon Zoom 500 AF with panorama format was introduced in 1995.
The third upgrade from the Nikon RF-10, and just when you thought the AF200 was good enough as an entry Nikon compact, the Nikon AF210 was even better - mainly because the 34mm f/4.5 lens used on the predecessor was replaced with a more practical 29mm f/4.5 wideangle. Next, the location and buttons for flash on/off etc., were made larger to facilitate easier operation. Other specifications remained. It was also called "Fun Touch 4 in the US.

Prior to the release of the APS-format Nikon Pronea 600i SLR camera. An early batch of Nikon APS compact camera series that sold under the label "Nuvis" have their early debut first:- Not all the Nuvis will be addressed in this site as I don't have much interest in this series - however, the APS format camera do have one very good strength in them - its ultra-compact dimension - which is PERFECT platform for use to designed high resolution Digital compact cameras. Measures only at 105mm x 30mm x 50mm, the Nuvis Mini of 1996 was debut as Nikon most compact camera ever produced - much due to the adoption of the APS IX240 format. It came with a fixed, 31mm f/4 lens and used a single 3V CR2 Lithium. The second model of the Nikon Advance Photo system, Nuvis 75i has a 30-60mm (37.5-75mm) f/4.5-8.5 Nikon lens. From then on, the focal length of these Nuvis models gradually extended to 125mm (Nuvis 125i. 1996) and even reaching 160mm (37.5-160mm f.4.3~f/9.7 zoom) with the Nuvis 160i of 1997. The APS Nikon are generally quite well made, colourful, sleek and more compact than any comparing 35mm format Nikon compact models due to the adoption of the IX240 format. There were some truly original ideas such as Magnetic/Optical Information Exchange, built-in Remote control, Fluorescent buttons for shooting in the dark, Bulb function, diopter adjustment and even titles in multiple languages etc. Some of the models illustrated above have demonstrated how well and innovative these APS Nikon were being made.
Some of you probably thought I am anti-APS. NOT exactly. Some of the Nikon Nuvis APS models have probably the best designed Nikon in them. The all-metal cased Nuvis-S (or S-2000) shown at the left hand side can easily be ranked as some of my favorite APS model.

It was truly unfortunate that despite all the effort among all the manufacturers put into in supporting the Advance Photo Systems, but overall, the main issue was originated by the basic architecture - well, don't write off anything yet, because everything could revive with the emergence in popularity on digital imaging where all these Nuvis models are simply perfect to form the basis to design for portable digital-compact cameras. Nuvis V, 2000
Product Brochure PDF (176k). for Nuvis V, 2000 - another cute & stylist APS Nikon model.
Two very similar models, the Nikon AF230 (upgrade from AF200 (top of this page) and the EF300 (also at the top of this page). was introduced in 1997. The main difference was their more modern outlook. They were supplied in a bright, almost silver metallic-like finishes. The locations of the flash ON/OFF buttons have been rearranged further away from the lense. The lens for both AF230 & EF300 remained the same - it was a Nikon 29mm f/4.5 wideangle. They carried model names as Fun Touch 5 & Nice Touch 4 for the US market.
