Part III - various Nikon Compact Camera Models 1995-1999

Nikon Zoom310AF QD 1994
The Nikon Zoom 310 AF QD has quite a confusing colour choices. The metallic silver as well as grayish-green used a well stealth plastic casing with the pure gray model has a more apparent feel of plastic. The 1995 model (center picture) has a different appearance from earlier ones.

The Nikon 38-70mm zoom also has a close focus function and it came with a standard built-in panorama format feature choice (the panorama logo printed at the bottom right hand side indicated this function). I am not sure what was the aperture of the lense and its actual close focus distance it permits but here is a very good review prepared by Edwin (current maintainer of Nikon Links.com where you can find out more with this model.

The odd introduction of the EF-100 back in 1993 continued with this 1995 model, Nikon EF-200 renamed "Nice-Touch 3" for US market. Two features distinguish it from the original EF-100. The lense was now a wideangle 31mm but with a slower maximum aperture at f/5.6 and it has a much stylist look exterior. It remained as a entry level Nikon compact model. At the same time, a QD version of the Nikon Zoom 500 AF with panorama format was introduced in 1995.
Nikon AF200.jpg
The third upgrade from the Nikon RF-10, and just when you thought the AF200 was good enough as an entry Nikon compact, the Nikon AF210 was even better - mainly because the 34mm f/4.5 lens used on the predecessor was replaced with a more practical 29mm f/4.5 wideangle. Next, the location and buttons for flash on/off etc., were made larger to facilitate easier operation. Other specifications remained. It was also called "Fun Touch 4 in the US.
Nikon AF Zoom 200QD,1995
The companion model to the fixed lens AF200 was this Nikon AF ZOOM 200QD model of 1995. It came with a Nikon 38-70mm f/4.7~f/8.0 auto power zoom lens..Both silver and black model were supplied. Features: AF Lock, Auto exposures, auto switch over flash, with Red-Eye reduction, anytime and flash cancel features. Closest focusing distance was 2.6 ft. (0.86m) and powered by 1 CR123a battery. Weighs approx. 8.5oz and Quartz data back (QD) model allows imprinting dates or time on exposed images (print on mode can be canceled)..

Prior to the release of the APS-format Nikon Pronea 600i SLR camera. An early batch of Nikon APS compact camera series that sold under the label "Nuvis" have their early debut first:- Not all the Nuvis will be addressed in this site as I don't have much interest in this series - however, the APS format camera do have one very good strength in them - its ultra-compact dimension - which is PERFECT platform for use to designed high resolution Digital compact cameras.
Nikon Nuvis APS Mini, 1995 Nuvis 75i, 1996 Nuvis 125i, 1995/6 Nikon Nuvis APS A20, 1996 Nikon Nuvis 110I, 1997 Nikon Nuvis APS 160i, 1997

Measures only at 105mm x 30mm x 50mm, the Nuvis Mini of 1996 was debut as Nikon most compact camera ever produced - much due to the adoption of the APS IX240 format. It came with a fixed, 31mm f/4 lens and used a single 3V CR2 Lithium. The second model of the Nikon Advance Photo system, Nuvis 75i has a 30-60mm (37.5-75mm) f/4.5-8.5 Nikon lens. From then on, the focal length of these Nuvis models gradually extended to 125mm (Nuvis 125i. 1996) and even reaching 160mm (37.5-160mm f.4.3~f/9.7 zoom) with the Nuvis 160i of 1997. The APS Nikon are generally quite well made, colourful, sleek and more compact than any comparing 35mm format Nikon compact models due to the adoption of the IX240 format. There were some truly original ideas such as Magnetic/Optical Information Exchange, built-in Remote control, Fluorescent buttons for shooting in the dark, Bulb function, diopter adjustment and even titles in multiple languages etc. Some of the models illustrated above have demonstrated how well and innovative these APS Nikon were being made.

Nikon Nuvis 1997   Nikon Nuvis 1997 Some of you probably thought I am anti-APS. NOT exactly. Some of the Nikon Nuvis APS models have probably the best designed Nikon in them. The all-metal cased Nuvis-S (or S-2000) shown at the left hand side can easily be ranked as some of my favorite APS model.

Nuvis V, 2000   It was truly unfortunate that despite all the effort among all the manufacturers put into in supporting the Advance Photo Systems, but overall, the main issue was originated by the basic architecture - well, don't write off anything yet, because everything could revive with the emergence in popularity on digital imaging where all these Nuvis models are simply perfect to form the basis to design for portable digital-compact cameras.

Nikon AF BF100,1997
One of the key feature of the successful Canon Prima compact series was their extra-large finder image. The Nikon BF 100 of 1997 also have similar feature (where the "BF" was probably explained as "Bright & Large"). It has a fixed 34mm f/4.5 and the extra-bright and large image projection made sales assistant very easy to sell this Nikon.

Nikon EF300 1997 Nikon AF230 1997
Two very similar models, the Nikon AF230 (upgrade from AF200 (top of this page) and the EF300 (also at the top of this page). was introduced in 1997. The main difference was their more modern outlook. They were supplied in a bright, almost silver metallic-like finishes. The locations of the flash ON/OFF buttons have been rearranged further away from the lense. The lens for both AF230 & EF300 remained the same - it was a Nikon 29mm f/4.5 wideangle. They carried model names as Fun Touch 5 & Nice Touch 4 for the US market.

Nikon Zoom 210 QD 1997
Similarly, the moderately good selling Zoom 200 QD also went through a round of facelift in 1997 and renamed as Nikon ZOOM 210 QD. The bright metallic silver bodied camera now came with a redesigned appearance which carried a more modern look and feel and the viewfinder was a larger type. The zoom lens supplied was also revised as a 35-70mm f/4.7~f/8.6 (38-70mm f/4.7~f/8.0 used on the previous Nikon Zoom 200 model).

Zoom-Mini 800, 1998 Zoom-Mini 600, 1998 Zoom-Mini 400, 1998
Three new Nikon compact models were launched in 1998. They were called the Mini-zoom series but the name was not entirely appropriate as their respective configurations were mid-to-high end models. Leading the pack was a Nikon Zoom 800QD, followed by Nikon Zoom 600QD & a Zoom 400 QD.

The Nikon Zoom 800QD optic was a 3.4X Nikon zoom lens, the 38-130mm f/4.5~f/9.5 lens actually employed with 3 Aspherical lens elements in its optical composition and at the same time, it broke the 105/125mm focal length barrier. The AF section uses a 7-zones Multi-AF and Spot AF system. Interesting features include simple to understand pictorial Dials/Rings for camera mode operations. It uses two instead of one 3V CR123A lithium cells due to its continuous power zoom functions and various power-thirst auto mode operations. The midrange Nikon Zoom 600QD (also called Lite Touch Zoom 110 QD in US) has a shorter zoom range (2.9X) with its 38-110mm f/4.0~f/10.8 Nikon zoom lense. It uses only single 3V Lithium only. The Nikon Zoom 400QD's lens was a lens with moderate zoom ratio of 2.1X. The 38-80mm f/5.0~f/9.6 Nikon lens also can perform close focusing. All the QD models have an alternate Panorama format shooting feature but then, many consumers began to realize the weaknesses (or rather the trick in cropping their shots, the demand for this feature began to subside during this period). The Zoom 800 was not too hot selling, despite with its impressive specifications and built quality.
