KELAB SHASHIN FOTOGRAFI KUALA LUMPUR (KSFKL)

The Shashin Photo Club

Kelab Shashin Fotografi Kuala Lumpur is a photography club base in Kuala Lumpur. It is a fairly young, small and close-knit club consisting of about 25 members, all of whom come from a diverse range of backgrounds.

The club owes a lot to its founder, Mr.
S. Arase Sugawara who came to Malaysia from Japan in the 1970s to teach photography under the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture on an exchange program. In his continued desire to help in the development of photography and photographic education in Malaysia, he helped found the club in mid 1990s. Today he continues to assist the club in his capacity as club advisor.

In setting up the club, one of the starting points was to try and structure the club along the lines of a Japanese "
dojo". This attempt is reflected in the inclusion of Japanese word of photography-shashin, in its name. Traditionally, the dojo has been a place of instruction where the newer members are instructed by the more learned and senior members. As a member develops his skills and knowledge, he in turn is expected to pass on this skill and knowledge to the newer members of the dojo
.
The club meets regularly every Tuesday everning, with the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month being  devoted to slide shows where members show their works and in return received constructive feedback from other members. The remaining Tuesday everning are reserved for instructional talks and the invitation of guest speakers. Previous guests have included both foreign and local professional photographers and representatives from camera and film manufacturing companies.

After the success of its few exhibitions, the club hope to allowing its members to both showcase their efforts as well as learn from the comments received from a larger audience.

Membership is open to all eligible applicants and new members are especially welcome. Apart from the requirements set by the Registrar of Societies, the only other prerequisite for membership is a serious and enthusiastic interest in photography as well as a desire to help others to learn and enjoy photography.
