Canon Original EF 35-105mm f3.5-4.5 AFD wide-Tele Zoom lens
Marketed 03.1987; Discontinued: 1991

Even before Canon EOS system was introduced, the FD-mount system zoom lense group has began to gain immensely popular among Canon photographers, and in a way, these wide-tele zoom lenses were slowly replacing traditional fixed focal length standard lenses as "standard lens" for the many Canon T-series SLR camera models. Naturally, when the transitional change to the EOS occurred, the first batch of the EF lens family were also comprised of a few standard zoom lenses in the lineup, one of which was a EF 35-105mm f/3.5~4.5. Throughout the long product cycles of EF lens development which is dated close to two decades now, there are three EF zoom lenses in this zoom range of 35-105mm range until they were replaced with 28-1XXmm range at the later stage. The original version of the EF zoom 35-105mm has a larger lens opening aperture from f/3.5 to f/4.5 while the later versions have a smaller aperture at its longer focal length, i.e. at 105mm its aperture will stopped down to f/5.6. The optical construction for the original version is also different from the later ones, where a 14 elements in 11 groups is used; while the latter uses 13 elements in 12 groups. Naturally, it also affects other variable factors such as their overall dimension as well as weight factor where the original f/3.5~4.5 actually measures larger in its dimension and with a length longer at 73.2mm x 81.9mm, weighs 400g as compared to the f/3.5~5.6 lens's 70.6mm x 63.3mm (AFD version) and 68mm x 63mm, weighing the same as 280g (USM version).

Canon original EF 35-105mm f/3.5~4.5 Wide-tele Zoom lens
This lens was treated as a high ranking member of the EF lens group during those early EOS system days, one of the reasons was, this is the shortest of all manufacturer's lenses with similar specifications. It uses a molded glass aspherical lens for greater compactness and image sharpness. Designed to be easy to mount and detach from EOS bodies with the stainless steel EF Mount, the lens uses an Arc-Form Drive (AFD) motor for fast, quiet autofocus operation and features Electromagnetic Diaphragm (EMD) operation. As with the early EF zoom / fixed focal length lenses, the manual focusing ring is quite narrow but overall, lens handling is commendable.

This EF-version of the Canon 35-105mm Zoom delivers a high performance in a compact package, one important aspect is, the original EF 35-105mm f/3.5~4.5 zoom has its optics improved from the older FD-mount version to allow macrophotography over the full zoom range. Further, the zoom control is a one-touch zoom instead of the dual rings control used in the FD version - however, I still think the FD 35-105mm has a far superior built quality and the FD zoom has a constant aperture of f/3.5.

As compared to the Canon EF 35-135mm f/3.5~4.5 AFD, this EF zoom gained in popularity as it is priced cheaper as well as more compact. Each has its own strength but this lens actually lasted quite some time than the comparing 35-135mm counterpart; it was eventually being updated as a far more compact version of EF 35-135mm f/3.5~5.6 AFD in 1991. Reason could be the attention has shifted to wider picture angle of 28mm zoom and at the same time, keeping the price even more affordable for new Canon photographers as their standard zoom lenses to supplement the various entry level Canon EOS camera models.
