Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for some of these great SLR bodies by Nikon, its creator. Nikon FM2 Millennium 2000 Commemorative Model featured at: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/htmls/models/specroomy2k/millennium2000/index.htm has some interesting update contributed by Mr Eric Anderson as to the material used for the top and bottom plate of the camera. He has a reply from Nikon Japan stating " FM2N Milennium body: "..does not contain any titanium. The frame of the FM2N is copper aluminum alloy. The top and bottom of the FM2N is plated brass.; while another info is relating to Nikon F5A (http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/htmls/models/specroom98/f5special/index.htm). All credit to Eric (Email:eric.andersen@central.sun.com ) Cheers. Merry Christmas.

Teddy: Your question on "can I assume all Nikon FM models can share accessories among one another ?.... " Yes and No. We would always believe that newer bodies have better backward compatibility than older body but not the case for your FM10 as it is a very simple bare bone mechanical SLR camera and it was not designed to work with most general accessories Nikon has designed for their FM and FE series SLRs. It cannot take the MD-11 nor the MD-12, it has no interchangeable film back, focusing screens and naturally, some of the basic remote control accessories that require the Motor Drive to function will not work with the camera. The older Nikon FM is a good buy and has a better compatibility than the FM10 but its maximum shutter speed is limiting to 1/1000 sec while the FM10 has 1/2000 sec. Its focusing screen is a fixed type too but it allows you to use both the MD-11 and MD-12 with its full remote control system. Although I would agree the FM is a good choice but I think the newer FM2n is even better ! If budget is a problem, why don't you consider saving more before considering getting yourself a real treat ? Well, your FM10 may just end up as the supplementary body instead. nikonlad, CA

Teddy: That is not a bad idea. However, if you can have some little extra to spare in cash and patience to wait for bargain, try to get a FM2n instead, because it is still a current model and you need not have to worry about support issue. Further, there are a lot of improvements being made to the FM2n as compared to the earlier FM. Well, probably you will be using your new camera than the FM10 more often - just wait till you have one and you will know why as It adds many possibilities to your photography.

Try www.Ebay.com or even the Malaysian section at:http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/ftz to see if there is any good bargain.

I last used a Nikon FM 10 years ago. I have heard about the new FM3A where the hybrid design looks attractive enough and practical for a spare body for my Nikon F3. Has anyone used the camera before and what is your experience witht e new AF Nikkor lenses. I have seen an used unit at Hong kong and I was quite tempted to get one. Just to be sure of its reliablity before I get trapped. Unfortunately, this great website does not provide any info on the camera yet and thus, I have to ask via the forum. Please use board to reply, I am travelling right now.

Dogan Erbahar: Not all SLR camera can faithfully reproduce the actual 36mm x 24mm format of a negative or slide inside the viewfinder. Usually that is a the professional grade F-series feature where what you see via the viewfinder eyepiece is what you will be expecting the entire film format be exposed. Midrange SLR camera models have some compromises in this respect where you will be only seeing 92-94% - however, that is roughly the area you will be seeing with slide mount covering the edges and corners. Anyway, I have heard the F users are also complaining the mounted slides are not showing the entire pictured areas of the entire exposed image, so let us not be worry so much about these slight drawback.

Hello,
I am a Nikon FM series user. In the operation manual it writes that "finder coverage, approx. 93% of the picture field". Can we rephrase that in a more clear way? Does that mean that the picture will cover a less (or more?) area than what I see from the finder by the given ratio %93? In both cases what is (or is there a) practical way to guess the actual wiev from riht-left and up-down borders?
I hope I am clear enough. Thank you...
