Modern Classic SLRs Series : |
The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

That is an interesting question and I just laid some comparison here. FM2n is lighter, more compact. It has a fast Motor Drive system (FT-3 cannot use with any, not even Nikon winder AW-3); It has a far superior film sensitivity range from 6(12)-6400 as compared with Nikkormat's typical 1.6k range; FM2n can change the focusing screen but Nikkormat has a fixed K screen; The multiple exposure operation is a joy to use in FM2n but a pain to even configure with the FT3; the shutter speed range is gain a generous 1/4000 sec to the FT-3 poor 1/1000 sec but more important is the speed range permits the use of fast film in broad daylight and a wider scope of aperture control. Well, these are a few of the significant things; but FM2n does not has the Mirror Lock Up mechanism (replace with a mirror flip-up self timer mechanism which provide similar function for photography that demands absolute motionless mirror operation); the FT-3 is very robust and tough (somehow all the midrange Nikon bodies like FM2n, FE series cannot challenge..); lastly, it sells so much cheaper as compared to the FM2n and it is a AI Nikon !!!!2. Are there any features that the FM2n offers that the
Nikkormat FT-3 did not offer ? I know the shutter speed
is faster than the max 1/1000th of the FT-3 but is there anything
else like a slower shutter speed than 1 second ?

My trusty old FM is approching it's golden years. On a trip to Europe the film advance jammed and rendered my camera useless.
I brought it to Nikon Canada and was told it could not be fixed.
So it sat in the dark for 2 years untill 2 weeks ago I decided
to operate on it myself.I removed the winder and then re-assembled it.Could'nt believe my eyes and ears ,IT WORKS AGAIN.
Now I would like to give my resurected baby an overhaul.
Could someone recomend where to buy a new focusing screen and
the foam damper for the mirror.Any Ideas what else a 23 year
old FM might need?.And finaly should could I do this work easily
myself or should I dare trust a PROFESSIONAL again?.

I am not so sure why are you so certain your FM has a broken light meter, most service outlet in the country should be able to fix that and you need not has to sent back to Nikon (after all, I doubt they dare to take your unit for servicing because according to what I have found out - all Nikon service outlets have been instructed not to do so as Nikon does not carry any parts for those oldies anymore and they cannot provide any replacement IF other parts of the body spoilt during the duration of repair or servicing !) Fact sucks...8. From : magnus mcgrandle (magnusmcgrandle@hotmail.com)

Hi
I've just had my beloved nikon fm - which has a broken lightmeter - returned unrepaired from nikon UK, who say they don't have the relevant parts anymore. Unfortunately they didn't even tell me which the relevant parts were, which I'm now finding out
Has anyone else had this problem and / or do they know where one might get FM parts from either in the UK or outside?
Cheers
