Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

I have been using my FE for 13 years and now it's time to get an addition body. Instead of an F100, I finally decided to opt for an FM3A.
My question is: with the fact that it's far more easier to find AF than MF lenses these days, how well the AF lenses work on the FM3A? I have a Sigma AF lens on my FE. The entire focus range of the lens is within a very small rotational range (may be 30degree). And the rotation has no friction (or dampping). This makes it very easy to mis-focus. Does anyone know the Nikkor AF lenses are anything mechanically better or work better in FM3A than the Sigma? Thanks

#Ken#: It is very difficult to answer your question, because you & I could well be reading from entirely different perspective - I may be a buyer and you are the definate seller. I would love to see this setup be as cheap as possible while you may think otherwise, so, how would you expect someone may give you a fair clue to determine your selling price ? Well, since you have no interest in keeping the camera nor in photography anymore - why don't do all of us a favor - pretend you got it for free and let the market determine its value rather than asking would that make you richer; afterall, I can probably argue since the previous owner was a professional photographer, the camera must has gone through hell and run own a lot in its condition - that sounds like it should be coming with a discount rather than asking for a premium, right ? Well, I see it is calling for USD175-00 right now with the 43-86mm zoom, not bad, not bad.... (Sorry to be that honest ...)

I have a Nikon FM with Nikkor lens on Yahoo auctions for sale.
http://page.auctions.yahoo.com/auction/52002289

Trouble is, I don't know what the value is, so I am at the mercy of those of you who know. Can anyone tell me what I can expect to get for this set-up? My father, a professional photographer, passed away recently, and I have all his photographic equipment, and I am trying to sell off some of the older pieces.

Please contact me at my email address if you have info for me.
Thanks!

I know it sounds a little crazy; I have already owned a FM2n and a F3 and it has never gave me any trouble whatsoever for the last eight years but the FM3A looked tempting enough - probably Nikon has never introduced a worthy upgrade of their manual focus bodies for the last 10 years ! There are already some scratchy reviews of the new body on the Net now - but somehow, I would rather prefer to read yours before I decide what to do. Dear Mr, when can we have another review on the FM3A ?

I have owned both a chrome body Nikon FM and the newer one (FM2n). Although the older one lacks higher shutter speed(s) and a dimmer viewfinder screen, but somehow I felt the old FM has a better finishing and handling than the newer FM2n. I have never seen a black paint body FM and I was wondering any of you did. This is a wonderful website and it is such a joy to see so many co-uses around. Cheers. V.S.

WHAT a GREAT Nikon website ! Possibly the BEST and the most comprehensive you can find on the Net right now. Hope to read what is your opinion on the new FM3A. More Power to Nikon !!!!!!

Well, I once owned a OM2(n). It was indeed a very good camera, the amazing part is its metering which can go down to 120 seconds in real time and provide TTL OTF metering ! I think most of you don;t understand what that means - because there is no other camera can provide similar capability. You have probably heard about metering flash off the film plane but OM2 can actually meter off the film plane NOT ONLY for flash, but for ambient light (By the way, the TTL flash technology was also pioneered by them back in the seventies). HOWEVER, I have dropped the system (I have only a basic camera, a flash and a standard lens and fetched a reasonably good price in exchanged for a FM2n). Don't ask me why did I switch, because that was a very childish thought to think the Zuiko lenses are very bad and my friend's Nikkor lenses were far sharper. Some may say it is true but I think I knew very little relating to what can I do with a standard 50mm f/1.8 during those days and obviously a portrait picture of a typical head and shoulder shot rendered with a 135mm should looked "far attractive" than those taken with my 50mm lens. Anyway, I am quite happy with the FM2 that I am using now except I wish there is a TTL flash control which I am quite weak handling flash pictures. GP, CA.

**turtlesoup**: Olympus OM2 is a great camera. It has everything you wish for in a professional class camera, interchangeable screens, a 5 fps high speed motor, slower Power winder and tons of accessories for close-up/macro setup; the main attraction still falls on its TTL OTF metering for BOTH flash and ambient light ! It has a few GREAT OM flash units to handle that job in the dark and fill in. UNFORTUNATELY, there are a few points you MUST know before committing: Firstly, it still has a silk (sounds better than cloth) shutter curtain which may be deformed if it has not been maintaining well and since OM2 models have long been discontinued (replaced) by OM4 back during the early '80, which means the cleanest body you may be acquiring could have had a a minimum 15 years product life. Parts for maintenance COULD well be another problem. The mechanical OM-1 uses mercury cell which is NOT available in many countries now (Mercury batteries are also used by some Nikon F meters and early Nikkormat bodies). The Manual focus and mechanical Nikon FM2(n) is still a current model and may present a "better buy" for technical support reason and it may last you another 30 years if well keep and maintain (unless one day, they suddenly woke up and decided the alkaline button cells are also hazardous to environment or for commercial reason not viable to produce them anymore... and the FM2 may end like an OM1..) . I know the OM2 is a very tempting choice, it is just a decision between the heart and the mind. Lastly, if someone still try to sell you an OM2 for USD150-00, JUST TAKE IT ! Nikon always prized theirs supposedly an entry level camera like a limited edition unit ! yours, JW

The explanation of the focusing screen at http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfeseries/fefmshared/html/screens.htm mentioned the two versions of focusing screen for FM2. I owned a original version of the FM2 (1/200 sec sync) but it came with a E-screen that has a notched tab as illustrated in the site - I would assumed the original owner changed that to the newer Type E but I didn't compensate the exposure all these while ushing my camera (It won't shown or varied greatly in the final print but I guess that matters if I use Slide film, I guess). But at least I know what to do now, thank you.
