Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for some of these great SLR bodies by Nikon, its creator. The respective Message Boards are some of the HARDEST hit section of the PIM site, if at any one time, the traffic is high - the table/content may take a while to load the data, just be patience. If it stalls, just click on the 'Reload' or 'Refresh' button on your browser menu once to re-attempt. Thank you.

I have a Nikon FM. I just replaced the light seals using a kit from Jon Goodman. I followed the instructions as closely as possible. The new seals look OK, however the film advance lever is jammed. I have noticed that when I press the shutter release button, the mirror flips up, but the shutter does not release. The lever at the side of the mirror resets the mirror in the down position.
All suggestions and comments will be appreciated.

Thanks
phil

Hi Howard:

The screen in the FM is not user-replaceable; the most likely source for a screen would be another FM body. Some disassembly will be required to make the swap.

Hi Shelby:

The AIS lens will definitely fit. I can't tell enough from your description of the others - if they are AI or AIS they will fit, if they are Non-AI they will not work properly.

The quickest way to tell the difference is to look at the silver metal "fork" on the aperture ring: on a non-AI lens, this is a solid piece with a slot in the center - in an AI or AIS lens, there is a hole on each side of the slot, making it look sort of like a pig's nose. The AI and AIS lenses also have a duplicate aperture scale, located to the rear of the fork, which is not present in a Non-AI lens.

For more information, the URL link above goes to the Nikon lens identification page on my website.

Hi John:

The double exposure lever doesn't move very far - only a few millimeters to the right, then you use the regular wind lever to cock the shutter for the second exposure. With the double exposure switch moved to the right, when you wind the lever the film will not move and the frame counter will not advance to the next number.

I am the original owner (1/22/79) of a Nikon FM and I would like to know what its worth (I recently upgraded to a Nikon D80). The FM is in immaculate shape - everything works - original owner/documents/packaging, includes long-nose D-80 case that holds camera w/ Nikkor 43-86 f3.5 zoom lens, Promaster 85-210 f4.5 (w/ hard case), Vivitar 283 flash (w/ attachment shield, diffuser/zoom lenses, case), hand/flash bracket, UV & Polarizing filters, macro (close-up) device. What is this package worth?
