Modern Classic SLRs Series : |
The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

Dear Rick, the new D300 (Nikon) stated (copied from the Digital Forum in MIR) where someone posted this "..5) Non-CPU AI NIKKOR: Can be used in exposure modes A and M; electronic range finder can be used if maximum aperture is f/5.6 or faster; Color Matrix Metering and aperture value display supported if user provides lens data.." dont know what it means...hopefully Nikon corrected their attitude and provides lens data display on LCD as well. The D40(x) has a different configuration ".. 5): Non-CPU: Can be used in mode M, but exposure meter does not function; electronic rangefinder can be used if maximum aperture is f/5.6 or faster. (IX Nikkor lenses can not be used)...". Looks like the D300 requires a better definition or description than this..2. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi Vivien:
Yes, the Nikon digital SLRs have the same lens mount. Depending on which camera model you look at, you get different features available: in basic terms, the D40-50-70-80 series cameras can use your lenses but the light meters do not work. In the higher level cameras from D200 and up, as I understand you get at least some light meter functions. Of course, you don't get autofocus when using your manual lenses.3. Hi Erhan: No, I'm afraid not. Closest thing is probably a D200, I suppose.5. From : Erhan ATAOÄžLU (erhanataoglu@ttmail.com)

Nikon SB-E with Nikon FM3A ? It should be. Just ensure the contact(s) on the flash is mated with the camera. Push it in to ensure proper connection. It should has a test fire button (Open Flash Button). Alternate way is to check if the camera shutter sped is AUTO set to 1/250 sec in A mode to see if the flash sync. (Set the flash to A (not Beam). This is an interesting Q&A session where Taj asked me and I forwarded to Rick to answer; I reprint for all to share (Rick replied Taj mail with a few illustrations from his CD toolkit for self repair (Find it at http://rick_oleson.tripod.com):
QUESTION:- Dust in viewfinder Nikon FM First I would like to say that your site is fantastic. It's really helped me figure out how to use this Nikon FM that I recently acquired (it was about to go to the landfill!). My question is, do you have any instructions or even just some diagrams that show the assembly of the viewfinder? I have a good amount of dust caught inside it that I would like to try to remove. I'm a fairly handy guy (I know which end of the screwdriver to hold ;), but I would like some kind of guidance before I start taking this thing apart. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -Taj-
Rick Replied: Hi Taj:
If you had an FM2, you would be able to remove the screen easily to blow off the dust. With the FM, unfortunately, the screen is not designed to be user-interchangeable. I do not have an FM handy at the moment to look at, but I believe you will have to remove the top cover and then take out the prism to reach the top side of the screen. You can see from the attached sketch that this is not a particularly simple operation, but it can be done. Once you have the top off, you can see in photo FM-3 a metal cap held on top of the prism with 2 coil springs; release the cap by unhooking these 2 springs, and you can lift the prism out... you may have to also remove the meter cell assembly by removing the 2 screws next to the eyepiece. Below the prism you will see the focusing screen (it's a multi-part assembly).
You can brush or blow the dirt off of the top surface of the screen and the bottom of the prism. I don't recommend going farther than this in the disassembly. If you don't think this looks like the sort of project that you had in mind, the dirt in the viewfinder will not do any harm or have any effect on your photos.... it's irritating to see it in the viewfinder but it's harmless if you can ignore it. good luck! rick :)= More info for self repair at: -
