Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

Hi Wayne:

I'm in central Kentucky too! I'd try taking the camera to Murphy's Camera on Winchester Road in Lexington and see if they know of a good place to send it. I think the chances of an FM2N upgrade are slim at this age though.

My FM-2 film advance/shutter release is jammed. If this requires servicing or a rebuild of the shutter (done once years ago), where should I send it (I am in Central Kentucky)? In addition, can (or should) it be upgraded to the 1/250 shutter from the FM-2(n)?

Thanks!

It is a FM not a FM2 or FM2n.
There must be a solution.

FM or Nikon FM2 ? The FM has a fixed focusing screen (meaning, it doesn't permits user to do screen changing), the FM2(n) allows user to change the screen on his own, can be used with one of the three different screens designed for the FM2/FE/FE2/FA/FM3A. http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfmseries/fm2/index.htm
Or check FM or FM2. Basically, just refer to the serial number at the back, if it starts with a "N" i.e. Nxxxxxxx, it is a FM2n.

Dear Friends. I have a Nikon Fm which was used for only 5 film rolls. By mistake I have damaged (scratched) its focusing screen. I want to change it, so can any body tell me from where I can get one.
Thanks in advance.

regarding the stuck up shutter, I bought a used FM2n were the shutter lever is not properly working. It stuck when I try to advance it.I removed the bottom cover and found out that a small mirror is blocking the movement of one lever on the center portion (i don't know the name)which I found out it came from the reflecting mirror from the viewfinder which read the aperture of the lense. After removing the tiny mirror and putit back to the original place, the shutter is perfectly working and everything is fine.

Film advance lever is jammed. Sounds like a mechanical issue where you have to send for repair. Good news is, you need not have to send back to Nikon as FM is a mechanical camera and you can literally find good service center outside Nikon which generally offer cheaper repair cost. However, I would suggest you to try pressing the film release button at the base plate first. Or open the camera back or release the lens from the lens mount and use the hand to try release the aperture stop down lever inside the lens mount. IF the lever is stuck, it is another issue. IF you FM is aged, why don't consider giving your camera a detail seasoned check out ? Generally, this should be done after 5 years or so. No such luck for electronic bodies, you either pay for a big bill or throw them away, haha ..that is what makes a mechanical camera so good about ! By the way, the moderator of this board, Mr. Rick Oleson is good at the mechanical cameras, do seek his advice too. http://rick_oleson.tripod.com

The film advance lever is locked. I can't figure out this site. I left a message about my FM problem. Where do I find the response? What are the page numbers in reference to? Is there a guide to the "Archived Guestbook of Previous Postings"? - Tom Nall

Hello Dinesh:

This is a problem that is facing all of us who have a large amount of film equipment. Nikon has thought of us, to the extent that your old lenses will fit and can be used on a Nikon digital SLR. However, in the lower models (below D200) your light meter will not function, so you have only meterless manual operation.

You can also use your old Nikon lenses on Canon and Olympus digital SLR cameras, using an inexpensive adapter. With these cameras, the light meter will still work, you will have manual and aperture priority auto modes available; but the auto diaphragm does not operate, so the viewfinder darkens as you stop the lens down.
