Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for some of these great SLR bodies by Nikon, its creator. Hi there! I just inherited a Nikon FM2 from my boyfriend's mother. It is in excellent shape, and she has never had any problems with it. I bought film and a new battery, but I can't seem to get through the step in the instructions where the exposure lamp illuminates to tell me if the shot is over or underexposed. Nothing happens at all, even when I adjust the shutter speed dial and lens aperture ring to all possible combinations. And before you ask, no I do not have experience with film cameras like this.

I verified the battery power using the meter, and the positive sign flashes red for a fraction of a second, so I assume it is not that I have no juice (plus it's a new battery, installed correctly). I also was able to take blank exposures to get the counter to "1", but then my progress stopped. No exposure indicator.

The shutter is not stuck, and the film is loaded properly, but did I do something wrong?

Hi, I have a Nikon FM I acquired and am trying to use. The first rolls I shot came out looking washed out and over exposed. I just replaced the light seals and mirror seal and shot a roll with a non AI 50mm Nikkor H and they came out very underexposed. I used the stop down lever to meter for each pic but I admit I set so that the correctly exposed and underexposed leds were both lit. Could just the led settings make them very under exposed (the manual says 1/5 to 1 stop) or is it that I don't need to stop down?

I have used a pair of black Nikon FM bodies for overseas travel for the past 27 years, without any mechanical or electrical problems. I started using them instead of a Nikkormat FT. To aid discretion, I have painted in the White NIKON lettering on the front of the camera with black paint. I call this 'discerning.' I take a 24mm f2.8 and a 50mm f2 lens, one on each body and this avoids having to mess about chaining lenses. I use a small bag that takes both cameras with lenses attached, a medium-size Filofax and pens, pencils etc and half a dozen rolls of film. Going to a hot country, this is quite enough to carry. Bag measures about a foot by eight inches by four. You do not need anything that is battery-dependent or auto this and auto that. One set of batteries, but I've not needed them abroad yet. My advice from the UK? Get hold of a couple of FM bodies while you still can - they are amazing little cameras, you could easily make a living with them. Rugged and dependable.

Hi Martin:

Unlike a digital camera, a film camera does not need to process data as it shoots; therefore, if you have a Nikon FM shooting 3.5 frames per second with a motor drive, it will continue at this pace until you either run out of film or your winder batteries give out.

Rick

Hi

I am researching the Nikon FM (1977) and would like to know more about the motorised features. If the motor drive unit can take 3.5 frames a second, what is the longest continuous sequence of photos that this camera will take?
