Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

Hi Renee: All of those are good cameras. The F3 is an autoexposure camera with an electronic shutter, the FM2 and F2 are fully mechanical. My personal choice would be the FM2 (FM2N, actually). It's smaller and lighter than the other two, it has a 1/4000 top shutter speed and a 1/250 flash synch speed, and it was made more recently. Plus, I happen to own one and it's extremely pleasant to use. I have never owned an F2 or an F3 (I have an F), so I'm not your ideal unbiased source.

Interestingly, FM2N's now are selling for less than earlier FM2's - no idea why that would be. A good FM2N body can be had for $150-250 depending on cosmetics, maybe less with some luck. You can get an F3 body for as low as that too; and you can get an F2 in the same range if you don't mind the old Non-AI meter prism... later AI prisms will increase the price a bit. My cost information on the above is from http://www.KEH.com, which I consider the best place to look for used gear. You may do better on eBay or somewhere like that, but with a bit more risk.

I am looking at buying a manual Nikon, i have owned the Nikon FM10, but apparently it was not Nikon themself who designed it. I am really interested in photography and am hoping to take it futher, i have an automatic Canon, but nothing beats the Nikon Manual!!!I am looking at the Nikon FM2 or F3, possibly the F2. I am not sure where to buy one that will be in good condition.? Can you please give me what price i should be expecting to pay and your thoughts on which camera should be best.
Thanx!

Hi Mike: Actually, I wasn't talking about timing manually on B... many cameras just don't have viewfinder readouts beyond 1 second even though the AUTO mode runs much longer. If you need to know what speed the camera is selecting for such long times, you have to follow along with a stopwatch to find out..... rick :)=

Thanks for the reply. I know you're right about using B and timing it manually. I was just curious about what time the camera was choosing, so it's not a big deal. I really do love this camera.

Hi Mike: Beyond 1 second, the viewfinder display doesn't tell you what speed you're going to get. The finder in the Olympus OM2 reads to 1 second also, but I've timed mine to 183 seconds in AUTO mode. If they tried to show all that in the finder, the numbers would get too little to read, and they probably figure that beyond one second you're probably not looking through the finder while you shoot anyway. Though I DID have a Ricoh whose finder display went all the way to 16 seconds..... rick :)=

The specs say that the FM3a shutter can stay open up to 8 seconds when in Auto mode. Yet the viewfinder shows 1 second as the max. What gives???

Hi gioia: If the camera was stored for a long time with batteries in it, the wire from the battery box may have corroded and broken. In any case, though, it needs some disassembly to sort it out, and this will require a qualified service visit.

I had problems with the FM's MD-11 motordrive sticking and sometimes jamming. I took it into the local photo repair and they said that they couldnt repair the MD-11 since they didnt have the parts. So I bought a used one and now that doesnt work either. Am I wrong or is the problem with the FM itself not the motor drive? Anyone else have similar problems and was there a fix? Many thanks. Bill

Recently, I brought my mom's old FM out to play and noticed that the meter wasn't turning on. I assumed it was dead batteries and replaced them accordingly. Unfortuantely this didn't solve my problem, and would like to know if there may be something i'm overlooking that would restore the meter, or if I may just have to take it in and have it looked at.

For anyone who intends to get a camera without losing the fun of photograhy. Get the hybrid Nikon FM3A ! It has both the best from the old, trusted mechanical features in the classic Nikon FM2N as well as sheer convenience, dependability of an old auto aperture priority Nikon mid mid range classic in the Nikon FE. It is just that simple.
