Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

No its a dud. I contacted Nikon direct and they told me that it is faulty. So if your camera is doing the same thing, then I would have Nikon take a look at it. Cheers

I have also tried on my end. IT closed the shutter more than 2 minutes when I turned the aperture to f/22 on my 28mm f/2.8. Remember those days when auto cameras (prior to F3, FE2/FA etc.) when we use the camera in auto mode and shoot with flash ? The first few frames without the auto sync function (i.e.) shutter closes each time when we tripped to go for the first frame, sometimes, it closes for over 1 minutes + and that was why the auto sync design came in to patch this problem (regardless what aperture you have set, it fires the first few frames at the top sync speed). Actually, if the aperture you have selected (Make sure your AF Nikkor is NOT set to "A" at the M/A switch, in such case, it will automatically closes to minimum aperture whih indirectly causes the problem. FM3A is a hybrid camera, it works in aperture priority AE (selection of aperture on your lense also indirectly determine the duration of exposure time requires to form a "good" exposure), so, say - if you are using an AF-Nikkor (or third party label) lens and have not unlock the "A" on your lens barrel, the camera's meter will assume it is f/32, f/22 or f/16 that a n aperture which you are selecting (based on the lens you are using), so, if you are shooting in low light, 2 minutes exposure time or more in such a combination is not impossible to happen. Anyway, if you still think the camera is faulty, do send the camera in - and BLAST them for me as well because it should not happen this way, haha..

Thanks JWoods I don't think this is normal. I tried it again and this time the shutter locked open and would not release until I switched the shutter speed dial from "A" to 1/4000. A brand new camera just out of the box, not as reliable as I had hoped. Thanks & Regards Darron Fenton

NOrmal. In fact, most manufacturers state the duration conservatively. My FE/FE2 behave the same manner. But usually, it doesn't count in the reci.ratio so, over a second or two, yu have to "double" the exposure time, ie.e 8 = 16 sec. 16=32 sec. in order to get exposure right (especially when you have selected a smaller paperture for L.T. exposure). But sometimes, scenes that exposure correctly also lost its appeal. it is just a matter of personal preferences HOW the exposure would fit the shooting situation.

Hi I just purchased a Nikon FM3A. In the specs it states that in Aperture priority the shutter will operate between 8 and 4000th of a second. However when I tried the shutter in low light conditions , the shutter stayed open for 24 seconds. I tried it again and it stayed open for 12 seconds. Third time it stayed open for over 30 seconds. The battery is not flat. This seems a little strange to me. The camera is brand new. Does anyone know if this is normal. Thanks Darron Fenton

Hi Sergei: There's a pretty good chance that what you hear actually IS a loose screw bouncing around inside. If so, this is not good on two counts. First, wherever the screw came from is now missing a screw, and it could malfunction as a result. Second, wherever the screw finally lands will be a place where it is not wanted. Typically what happens is that a screw bounces around until it lands in the teeth of a pair of meshed gears.... it then stops bouncing because it becomes caught in the gears, and at the same time the gears stop working because there's a screw jammed in them.

It's very hard to guess where the screw came from, or where it is now, or how likely it is to become a serious problem. You could either use the camera for as long as possible and hope for the best, or try to return it to the seller and hope to find a better one. When (if) ever it does finally jam, it will be repairable - but there will clearly be some cost involved at that point.

Hi, Just got my Nikon FM from e-bay. Everything seems to work fine except some noise (like a loose screw moving inside) which appears when camera tilted up and down. It seems to come from the right side of it. No noise is heard when camera is tilted side to side. Does anybody knows if this may suggest a mechanical problem which needs to be fixed or I just can disregard it? Thanks a lot.

Hi Lucy: In most cameras, you attach the triangular metal rings to the lugs at the upper corners of the camera... then, slide the metal buckle onto one end of the strap, feed the loose end through the triangular ring and back through the buckle again. The plastic pieces can be used to keep the loop neat at the end of the strap, they aren't really necessary.

Here's what it generally looks like when it's done:

hi. i just got my camera kit with neckstrap, except i have no idea how to attach the neckstrap, there doesn't seem to be any instructions. I have two triangular metal pieces that open like a keychain, two rectangular metal pieces, and a little black rectangle. if anyone can help me figure out how to attach this, it would be much appreciated. thanks.
