Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

Recently my Nikon FM shutter stopped working. I have had the camera since it was new and it is lightly used. The shutter lever was advanced, but the shutter release button goes down, but the shutter will not release. Any suggestions or ideas, and must I have this repaired professionally or can I try to repair it myself (as I am not intimidated). A professional repair is probebly not cost effective. Thanks Tim

i have FM2N with MD-11. When drive is in ON position it also switch on the camera which obviously drain the battery. Is there solution of this problem to avoid drain. Few months back i read in the net somewhere someone has put a tape on the terminal of MD-11 and thus it stop the battery drain. Any input/comments on this specific issue will save me from keeping always BCs in bag when the gear is mechanical and battery is used simply for meter only. Thanks Gill

I have a pretty old model of a nikon 35mm SLR camera. I was manually loading in slide film and went to "click" it in by sort of taking a picture to see if it loaded right, and now it wont take any pictures and all I see on the screen is black! It's like it's stuck "in between pictures". What can I do??????

To Gavin: The function of the camera does not depend on what kind of lens is mounted. The selelection of a lens is governed by the type of motives you intend to shoot. The cheapest Nikkor manual focus lens is probably the 50mm/F1.8, but not necessarily apted for all kind of motives (e.g., for wild life, at least 300mm is necessary).

"FM rewind handle" or "knob" ?? If it is the latter, it may be possible but may looks odd as most older FM rewind know has slver trims. Secondly, I think it is kind of risky for the handle to be interchanged between an old/newer FM. Next, I don't think you can do that yourself either, so, in either case, why not consider asking a qualified technician to handle BOTH tasks for you, after all, the cost may not be too much of a difference to change a new FM2(n) original handle or used an older FM's vertical rewind psot.

I think you are referring to older Nikon FM. Basically, as leo explained " .. hot-shoe contact becomes active only when an electronic flash unit is mounted, touching it accidentally is harmless. The use of flash units not provided with a hotshoe contact is not recommended because accidental firing is likely to occur due to short circuiting at the contact (safety switch). When using such flash units, seal the hotshoe contact on the camera body with vinyl tape or something appropriate to insulate it." Next" ...IF you have accidentally set the shutter speed between 1/500 sec. and 1/4000 sec., the ready-light will blink when the Speedlight is fully charged, to warn you that the shutter speed is outside sync range.".
