Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

Greetings, I have a question about the FM2(n). My understanding is that when taking a picture a person chooses a shutter speed manually and then adjusts the aperture while looking at the light meter in the viewfinder until the meter reads 0. This would mean the FM2 is shutter speed priority camera? I assume though a person could set the aperture, and then turn the shuttter speed dial until the light meter reads 0. Is this a normal procedure to use the camera in an aperture priority way? Thank you, Andrew

Hi Giacomo ! The FE2 has a battery-dependent shutter, where as the FM-series (FM, FM2, FM2n) is equipped with a fully mechanical shutter and only uses the battery for powering the meter. The FM2 is fully manuallly operated, where the FE2 has an aperture-priority automatic mode - "A" on the speed selector dial. You manually set the f-stop and the camera then automatically selects the matching electronically controlled shutter speed steplessly between 8 and 1/4000 sec. In the viewfinder of the FM2 you have a lit indication of correct, over or under exposure. In the FE2 a needle points to the correct exposure-speed for the selected aperture in A-mode, but this is not lit as on the FM2. Both cameras has the set aperture value mirrored into the viewfinder. Hope this helped - otherwise just come back here again! Stind

In the "Additional Information on Nikon FM-10 Exposure Control and Metering Issues (Nikon FM-10 Part IV)" page, the meaning of two LEDs glowing together (GREEN & +/-) is given as over/under exposure by "1/5 to 1 stop". Is it so? I think that will be "1/2 to 1 stop". Pls. clarify. My second query is whether I would be able to fire the shutter below the stipulated 12 sec.(say 4 sec.) when used with Self-Timer in Nikon FM10 a la FM3a?

Have a FM3A, shutter will tend to stick with setting @60 and once it is stuck, once you turn the meter to 500, it releases. Does anyone ever have this occur and knows what exactly is wrong, kindly help, need suggestions. Joe

navneet: Camera is just a tool. Generally, SLRs with a Nikon label should be fine for you. The Nikon system as a whole is huge, the only thing you have to start thinking is whether you want an autofocus SLR camera or manual focus body (option to think if a digital one is suitable for you). Since you mentioned budget is an issue, the Nikon FM2 should be good enough - it is time proven with great system compatibility and always preserve its basic value - so, it is not a bad idea to buy a used unit for smart investment as the camera is always in great demand as used equipment.

Re: Lost rewind knob: Hi Don! Are you in the US? Try and call Nikon at 1-800-Nikon-US - that's the number I have. Just tell them it fell off and there is an important film inside the camera you need to get processed ASAP. If this doesn't work, get back here! Regarding value - I think the best price is obtained on eBay - but if you don't have an account at eBay with positive ratings the price you can get will be lower. In Europe I think the best price is obtained in Germany, where a good condition FM2 sells for around EUR 220-260.- The black version usually brings home a bit more money than the chrome one. Good pictures are important when selling on eBay. If you wan't to sell both lenses and camera the best price is obtained by selling the camera and each lens seperately.
