Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

about this FM... a better description: on the finished prints, the bottom portion is black (unexposed) if taken at a speed faster at than 1/30 - aperture wide open. at a tight apeture i can get away without it up to 1/500, but never 1/1000. at each higher speed the unexposed portion enlarges.

so... i assume the mirror is not in the fully retracted position in less than 1/60sec or the shutter is tripping too early (before mirror hits top?) i assume its the mirror because its out of the way enough to not harm the images at a tight aperture.... anyway, CAN THIS BE ADJUSTED/FIXED? please help any way you can! cheers, dw

HELP HELP HELP! my Nikon FM can't take a shot over 1/30. all faster speeds are only partly exposed, eg: more and more black at faster speeds 1/500 and 1/1000 unexposed. is my mirror too slow? not fully "flipping up" before shutter trips? any help at all please! Cheers,

dw

ps: remove NOSPAM to email.

Hi James! You have certainly come to the right place - this being the Nikon FM-seris message board - and your camera being a Nikon FM. The original FM has a turnable lock-ring surrounding the shutter release. Later the FM was updated and the shutter-release-lock disappeared, but there was still no model designation on the front of the camera to identify it as a FM. The Nikon FM was released in 1977. It was produced until 1982 when the FM2 was introduced. The FM-series cameras are strongly build, and the main difference between the FM and the FM2 is that the FM has a topspeed og 1/1000 sec, the FM2 1/4000 sec and the FM2 has a faster flash-syncronization speed of 1/200 or 1/250 sec on the FM2N. To cut this short - you have a great fully manual camera! More questions? Bring them on!

Hi I have a Nikon camera I am trying to identify, there do not appear to be any model names on it but I was hoping the serial number may be of use. Can anyone help? The serial # is FM 3049667. Thank you in advance.

Ps to email remove the spaces.

Hi Peter, While I'm disappointed that I can't "hot rod" my FM2, I'm not entirely surprised. I own several FEs and FE2s and know that their rings are definitely not interchangeable due to the obvious difference in back-to-front thicknesses. On passing glance though, the rings of the FM and FM2 appear to have much more similar dimensions and seem like better candidates for inter-model transplants. However, since I didn't have an FM available for a direct comparison, I figured it would be more prudent to get some authoritative advice first. Thanks.

Hello Walfredo! Sorry to disappoint you, but the indexing ring on the FM and FM2 are not alike. Neither is the mechanism that transfers the position of the indexing ring to the lightmeter nor is the diameter of the ring the same. I wanted to do exactly the same thing as you are describing - namely to use the indexing ring from a FM on a FM2 thus allowing non-AI Nikkor lenses to be used on the FM2. With heavy machining done to the ring from the FM it would still not work without a thin (brass) ring that would have to be made on a lathe - and even with this much work done I don't think it would work. Personally I would have loved this to work, also because the FM indexing ring is made from metal, whereas the FM2's is plastic! A question springs to mind - is the ring the same on a FM2 and a FM2N - I will check that, as I have all versions of the FM, FM2 and FM2N (except the titanium FM2 and the commemorative ones that is. I could sell you an indexing ring, and it is much easier to replace on the FM2 than on the FM! Feel free to email me if you would like a ring!

I have a Nikon FM2 which is mechanically perfect except for the aperture indexing ring. The little tab which mates with the ridge on AI lenses is broken and as a result, the camera can only be used in stopped-down mode. When I move the indexing ring myself, the meter reacts normally, so I know that replacing the ring is all that's needed. My question is: Would it be possible to simply swap the ring on the FM2 with that of an FM, without having to do any modification to the camera or ring? While it wouldn't be a problem to get a "parts" FM2 on Ebay, "parts" FMs tend to be more plentiful and cheaper to boot. Additionally, the idea of being able to mount non-AI lenses apeals to me. Any input from camera repair gurus would be much appreciated.
