Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for some of these great SLR bodies by Nikon, its creator. Geoffrey Mee: FM2 has a standard ISO-type hotshoe, Nikon has prioduced many speedlights thus far, look for anything that has an equivalent ISO-type flash foot that will do. As the camera doesn't provide TTL flash exposure metering, you can only make use of either AUTO or MANUAL flash (with a little benefit that the viewfinder will signal flash charge status), so - it is not necessary to waste your $$ to buy the best of Nikon speedlights. IF you are not often using flash photography, the old SB-15 is good enough, another worthy consideration is the SB-16B which is more powerful and has a secondary light for fill-ins during bounce and synchro-sunlight photography. Perhaps the NEXT question is only whether HOW POWERFUL your need the flash for your photography. As some of the most powerful Nikon flash are bracket mount, it adds a lot of weight and they are usually very bulky which restricts mobility. Good news is, except for a few models which doesn't support AUTO/MANUAL flash, you can also use all the AF speedlights with your FM2. Read all the MF and AF Nikon speedlights at: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf3ver2/flash/sb16ab/index.htm

FM3A ?? You have got yourself a real treat, huh ? Make no mistake: The camera can MOUNT with all Nikkor lenses (careful when you do with older Non-Ai type as the tab on the metering ring at the lens mount can be damaged if excessive force is used - naturally, you will NOT enjoy metering as it provides inside the finder). SO - in order to ensure you can use the metering guide correctly, Nikkor Ai-type of lenses should be used (Ai-S is within the broard scope of "Ai" lens group). Although the MANUAL FOCUS Nikkors can either be an Ai, Ai-S or NON-Ai but if you are using an AF-Nikkor lens (ANY of them), you need not have to worry anything then, because any AF Nikkor can couple all the benefits and/or features offering in a FM3A body as AF-Nikkor essentially carry a basic Ai-S specification + MORE... but since MF-Nikkor are so much more economical than comparing AF-Nikkor, so I would assume you may try to get yourself with a MF Nikkor, in such case, read the seller spec, as long as it is an Ai-Nikkor lense, it should work with your FM3A. Hello, I just purchased an FM-3A camera with a standard MF 50 mm lens. I would like to buy a second hand MF wide-angle and MF telephoto lens on ebay, but I'm getting lost in all the different types there are: AI, AI-S, and the like. Could anyone tell me which lens types are compatible with the FM-3A and what is the difference between those that are compatible? Your recommendations are highly appreciated. Thank you, Piet

I have a MD-11 motor drive with a "sticky" trigger button. The button depresses smoothly, but athe action appears to stick in the on position. A smart tap on the button frees it. This is particularly annoying in the continuous mode. Does anyone have disassembly instructions and/or exploded views of the MD-11 so I can attempt a diagnosis or repair?

Does any one know which tripod mount fits the MD-12 motor drive? Is it the AH-2, AH-3, AH-4 or AH-5? Do they all fit? What's the difference?

Help, please -- My granddaughter received n MF12 for her high school graduation (1981-2) and has asked if she could get "today's equivalent" of that camera. (She's not interested in digital cameras.) Can anyone tell me what was the original price of a basic FM12 and what might be the price of an equivalent today? Please reply by email -- Thanks for any help. -- Mort Young

YES ! The FM3 should be the FM3A - unless there is a unknown version that has no AUTO mode being introduced secretly by Nikon (?? which I doubt very much there is such a model existed in the market). With the FM3A, there is a tiny "A" after the name "FM3" incrobed in front of the camera for identification. The camera comes with either a choice of all-black or silver-chrome finish. Another simple way to distingush the model is, there is green "A" on the shutter speed ring. see: http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfmseries/fm3a/manual/htmls/map.htm
