Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for some of these great SLR bodies by Nikon, its creator. I just bought an SB-50 Speedlight for y Coolpix 5000 and was assured that it would serve well with my FM2 Millenium. The online manual for the FM2 mentions several earlier Speedlight s but not the SB-50. Will the SB-50 not serve? Or is there a way to use it just as a more general flash unit?

Hello there, I've just been to Japan last week and I bought an original FM2 body(1983) for only US$200.(there was another FM2n body with a lot of scratches selling for US$350.) I was so happy as I can hardly find an original 1983 version in Hong Kong and the price for this one is unbelievably cheap. I tried this during the trip and taken a few rolls of pictures, it seemed working in perfect condition and the pictures were having similar quality as those taken with my F100 which I brought along to Japan. It's been 20 years since the manufacturing of this great machine and It's still working in good condition. This is something that couldn't be found in electronic cameras.

I have used a Databack for Nikon FM before. Please make sure your camera is a Nikon FM (and NOT FM2n - you can see a starting S?N with an alphabet "N" infront: Why ? because the original Nikon FM has not been designed with a direct rear attachment of the databack. Early version of the Data back is a cabled type where you have to plug the cable into the PC (flash) terminal at the front of the camera. Read: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfeseries/fefmshared/mf12/index.htm
The subsequent/current Databack model called MF-16 (?). It cannot be used on the older Nikon FM (but usable with only the FM2 series, FE series). Thoe latter bodies have direct electrical contacts and eliminates the need for cable mount to PC Socket. Next, both databacks were products of the late '70 and early '80. They cannot peform sophisticated data imprinting and can only select one display at any one time. You can change the display of date (US or Asian) and it can imprint numbers onto film. I would suggest you to go through the link above and find out more. Lastly, if your camera is a Nikon FM2(n), you can use BOTH the Nikon MF-12 and MF-16 (see:http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfeseries/fefmshared/html/databacks.htm). Help it helps

Ladies/Gentlemen & colleagues: Have a Nikon FM SLR camera to which I am endeared and is my everyday workhorse in our dermatology department. What we would like to find is an ALPHA/NUMERIC databack for that older Nikon which gives us the simultaneous use of both letters and numerals on photos being taken. All helpful suggestions most appreciated.

I want to maintain a well conditioned Nikon FM SLR camera thatwas sold to me by a friend who migrated abraod.Unfortunately, I found out that the metering light of it is not working properly.I've tried bringing the camera to the local service center in this country(Philippines),and they made me wait for several months, finally telling me to buy a new one instead. I want to know if the metering light parts really were shelves - out by Nikon since the FM SLR Camera have been "Phase-out" or out modeled?.I hope somebody out there can help me.

Hey Jonsey...I did manage to find the MD 12 owners manual online and the last page covered troubleshooting. I discovered that I did not have the camera and motordrive "syncronized" Once I completed that task everything works great! Shot a roll of the lake I live on today! If you have any "instructions" regarding the loading/unloading please share them with me. Please feel free to use my email as a contact if you wish. Thanks in advance, Mike
