Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

I have a Nikon FM. Purchased in Japan in 1978. The light meter is dead, Nikon say they do not repair the FM, too old. Do you know who can repair the FM light meter? thanks

Anybody know where I can find a reliable service agent for my Nikon FM in N.W. London, England? It's not winding on reliably, so I'm getting intermittent double exposure, and also a scratch across the centre of the film, again intermittently.

hi i would like to enquire whether a lens without an ai coupling will work with a nikon fm3a body in aperture priority mode. i understand without the ai coupling it will only work like a manual lens and thus will need a light meter for accurate metering. however when set to A mode the shutter speed actually changes with diff light source but i dunno whether this is accurate and so i would like to ask for ur advice this enquiry is a result of my recent purchase of a carl zeiss jena ddr biometar 2.8/80 mc lens. i understand german glass are better than japanese glass in more ways than one and i was kinda pulled down into buying this lens due to the shop recommendation. if u could can u gimme ur advice regarding this as well your help is deeply appreciated thanx

Hi all Nikonians, Re FM – the first version had a shutter button lock around the button in the form of a milled ring whereas the second version had the lock built in to the lever wind so that it had to be in the 'ready' position to be able to fire the shutter. Thanks for the note about reversible lens hoods for the 105f/2.5 AI lens; it also true of the 85/f2 AIS lens. thanks Gibbo

I just bought a FM3a, but have yet to pick up a couple of lenses. I'm undecided on which types I should invest in. I would like to buy a couple of essentials or versatile lenses that would be easily to apply under a wide variety of situations. I've thought a lot about zooms, which seem to provide good value, and I think I may go that route. Are zooms a good choice for someone in my situation? What are the negatives of using zoom lenses? A friend of mine said I should look at buying a couple of good prime lenses. He said I might get better picture quality. I don't know, is he right? What would be an essential prime to look into? What photographic qualities do prime lenses offer that zooms do not, and vice versa? Thanks, Jon

Just picked up a 1982 vintage FM2. Idiot question: It's a totally manual camera. When setting up for a shot, how do I know, after focusing, what shutter speed to choose? Is there an LED in the viewfinder that acts like the old analog needle exposure meter on my old Nikkormat FE? I can stop down with aperture preview, but doesn't give me what I want. Thanks for help. (no dumb questions, only dumb people).

FM3a flash photography: There are two ways of using flash with the camera. Any ISO-Type common flash models with a sync contact should be able to work with the FM3A in MANUAL/AUTO flash modes. The remaining contacts found on the accessory shoe on the camera are meant for dedicated functions (such as viewfinder LED, flash charged status and TTL). Technically, any other brands with standard ISO type accessory shoe should also be usable with the camera (EXCEPT you have to ensure other secondary electrical contacts on your flash foot) MUST NOT be in contact with the auxiliary contacts on the accessory shoe of FM3A). The alternative is the PC terminal on the FM3A which allows older flash types with sync cable connection or using flash extension (auto/manual) away from camera. Naturally, a Nikon TTL flash such as SB-16B and SB-15 is the best bet for such a camera/flash combination (although I don't own an AF Nikon, I think many old Nikon AF units are also usable in TTL mode with the FM3A).
