Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

I have an FM10. The shutter has started exposing only half the frame. Any one know a simple do-yourself fix. Or a good repair service in the San Francisco Bay Area? Thanks.

the FM2 is just a basic camera. I used it for 15 years and found nothing great about it. I was let to believe it was great. after doing some thinking. I realise that the FE2 and the FG is much better than the FM2. the worst thing about FM2 is the LEDs display metering. anyway I get rid of my old cameras. that is FM2, FE2 and bought the modern camera F100. well, I still keep my Nikon FG which I consider the best among the 80's camera

Hi all, I have an FM2n and want to buy a flash. I'm not looking for anything too expensive ($100-150). I'd like to eventually buy and AF camera to use it with later. I was looking at a couple of Sunpaks and the Quantaray Q383. Any suggestions? Should I go for a Nikon flash?

To Emane: A F3, is it worth or not? Difficult question. My advice: contact friends who own a F3, and have a try. Advantages of the F3: 100% viewfinder view (bright!), highly accurate meter (80/20, very useful), longest exposure time > 8s when in "automatic", mirror lock up, exchangeable viewfinder prisms, lots of focusing screen types, also non-AI lenses can be mounted;
disadvantages: very heavy, annoying non-ISO flash hotshoe, shortest exposure time for flash only 1/80s, highest film speed for TTL flash 400 ISO, only manual metering with MLU.

Hello. I bought my FM in April 1982, for £147.95 from Youngs of Leicester, and I am still very pleased with it. It has survived quite harsh weather in the UK and overseas, just a couple of breakdowns, but it has always been worth fixing, largely due to cost of replacement with newer models. But it was worth every penny, and I shall never part with it. Meter is very good, but take care into light in strong sunlight, but when you get used to it you should have little trouble. Very robust body, shutter is pretty quiet for an SLR, 1/1000th sec more than adequate for most of my pics, I have only used faster speeds on FM2 very rarely.

Nikkor 50mm f1.8 that came with it is superb, and with PK Set is super for close ups. I now have also a Micro Nikkor 55mm f3.5 pre AI it is a cracking lens, cost £125 a bargain Also a 43-86 Nikkor sold as seen, for £39 last year, still really got to test it thoroughly, but internal blemish (minor) seems not to show up on my pics. Have tried one or two other borrowed lens, and my Tamrons and Vivitar Series One Zoom are superb. Overall, if you can get a well looked after example, and look after it you should have a tool for life. Cheers Paul.

PS MD11/MD12 very loud I do'nt use them myself, but I'm told they do the job.
