Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for some of these great SLR bodies by Nikon, its creator. linda: That sounds like the bearing system of the film advance mechanism is spoilt. The next cause caould be at the base wheel of the film take up spool that is loosen, this is a much easier fixed than earlier assumption by any experienced technician.

Fei: To determine your meter, go out of your house during daytime, turn on your meter (light touch shuuter button), set your camera with '125' on shutter speed, turn your aperture on your lens to f/4, if the + sign is on, cover your lens with the lens cover, it should turn '-' (if not, turn the aperture to f/11). If it works, there is no problem, just set the exposure right (read here for mmore: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/fototech/apershutter/index.htm); NEXT: "...same button (film rewind button) doesn't slide in and out...", after it has been pressed, it will not be "in and out" just loose without tension, that is all. Nevermind, these are natural path to photography, good to hear you have got a mechanical FM2n, in time to come, you should picked up and benefit a lot more in techniques.

I bought a used Fm2n. I have two problems with it. I wonder if they are serious that I should send it back.

First, the meter always lit as +, When I press the shutter, I see the 0 flashes along with the +. I've never seen the- lit up.

Second, on the bottom plate, there is a litter button on the right which you push before rewind the film has "sliding" movement when I shift the camera from up-right position to up-side-down. When the shutter is cocked, the same button doesn't slide in and out, it's more pringed loaded and tight.

I'm new to MF. ( so new that I didn't know how to open the back!) I don't have lenses yet. Any sugestions about the fate of this camera? I appreciate your input.

I have never done any photography other than using cardboard cameras at the beach with my sons. the last kid is almost grown so i wanted to try a new hobby. I bought a new Nikon fm10 and I love it. I wanted something manual that I could control all the settings but simple and durable. My brother is an excellent photographer and he prefers manual that is what made me go that way. the owners guide was easy to understand and on my 2nd or 3rd roll of film i took some really good pics of a friends son and his mother loved them. I am looking to buy a flash now. The camera shop owner said I should get comfortable with the camera before I bought a flash. I look forward to a satisfying hobby. Thanks for making a product that allows me some creativity and doesn't do everything for me. Sally Reed.

To Tony: As a flash for the FM3A, I would recommend a third-party flash like the Metz MZ 32-Z2 (dedicated for non-AF cameras like the FM3A). With the SCA adapter for the FM3A, it offers full TTL capability (and the ready signal in the viewfinder too). Its guide number is 32 (in meters) for ISO 100.
Not only it is cheaper than Nikon's overpriced flashes, it is more flexible and much better in ergonomic respect.

I have an FM , which i have owned since new. But now every once in a while random pictures taken are black on half. If it is vertical half of the picture is missing, or behind this black. I really like my camera and I am not sure if this could be repaired or even what the problem is. I also wonder if it could be updated with new insides. Please help if you can. Thanks.

Hi. I have the new FM-3A and would like to get a smaller flash that is convenient to put in my pocket and use for candid shots. The Nikon SB-30 with a GN of 52 at ISO100 with 28mm in feet looks like a good choice but they don't seem to be on the market yet. (I have an SB-28 but want something smaller for parties etc.) Any opinions or suggestions? Tony
