Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for some of these great SLR bodies by Nikon, its creator. Hoping all you knowledgeable FM people can shed some light on a camera for sale on Ebay. It is item #1335255675. A FM2/T Limited Edition but not a Year Of ......... model. It is #275 but the owner is unsure how many of them were produced. The serial numer is 9005008 making it a relatively early model. I've tried to find reference to it here and elsewhere but am no wiser. Does anyone know the special event that caused this limited production run, total produced or have seen others like it?? Much confused Jon

David: That was a good piece. I had experienced that once and the aperture stop-down lever inside the lens mount did the trick too and could have saved me a couple of ten bucks.

Hi, I did a bad thing. My photo bag (amply padded) fell from waist height onto the floor, snapping the zoom lens off of my FM2N. I epoxied the flanges back on the zoom lens, but then after I tested the camera, the shutter jammed. The shutter was stuck half way up (and open) with the mirror locked up. A bit of fiddling cured the jam. Maybe this would be of use to someone. Here is what fixed it:

1) Open the film door (and remove the lens)
2) Push up the aperature lever that normally operates the lens aperature (located on the left side of the mirror when the camera is facing you). This will manually re-cock the shutter button.
3) VERY VERY CAREFULLY with the edge of your fingernail (it's softer than tweezers) pull down the shutter curtain NOT BY THE TOP OPEN EDGE but by one of the flat hinges connecting to the fins on the shutter. The shutter should be springy while pushing downwards.
4) While holding the shutter curtain down, press the shutter button.
5) Let go of the shutter curtain with your fingernail.

If this doesn't work, try steps 1-5 again.

I can't emphasize enough that touching the shutter curtain is on the whole forbidden everywhere you look, but this would be a quick fix if you're in a bind. Also, only use your fingernail, push as lightly as possible, and don't let your greasy fingers touch the fins or they will leave prints. Whatever you do, make sure you push the shutter DOWNWARDS towards the bottom of the camera (not outwards towards the mirror) because the fins are very delicate.

Anyone have a similar experience with their FM2N jamming? Did the problem go away or can I expect many jams in the future? Any comments would be appreciated.

Linda: " ..difference between the AF 70-300 mm F4.0-5.6 G -62mm and the 70-300 mm F/4 - 5.6 D-ED lens? ...." Simple, the AF 70-300 mm F4.0-5.6 G -62mm is NOT an ideal lens for your Nikon manula focus Nikon FM10 as it doesn't has an aperture ringYou may consider taking the AF 70-300 mm F/4 - 5.6 D-ED lens instead if you feel that zoom range falls within your need. I hope this is NOT too late as many irresponsible sales assistants are misleading clients to take the G-lens and never accept them for changing later. I have raised this topic once with Nikon here, but they claimed it is not Nikon's fault - but I am arguing on the fact that improper and inadequate product knowledge being channeled to the retailers which was the basis causing so many of such incidents happened during the last few months.

I'm looking for a repair manual to fix my FM. If these are not available, is there a business that does these repairs to everyones satisfaction? I've always loved my FM and would like to get it back in action. Thank You, Galen B.

I received a FM10 for a Christmas present, but am not very knowledgable on how to use it. However, I do really enjoy it and am looking to buy a lense for it. What is the difference between the AF 70-300 mm F4.0-5.6 G -62mm and the 70-300 mm F/4 - 5.6 D-ED lens? HELP ME before I make a purchase I might regret.

I have a FM3A and also an old lens 80f2.8, the auto focus lens made for the F3A. I note in the Manual for the FM3A the statement not to use these old AF lenses(for the F3A body) on the FM3A as it may damage the lens or/and the body!!! I seem to recollect having used this lens on my earlier FM2n. Can someone help me understand what damage is possible? likely?
NB I have removed the rabbit ears from the lens barrel as not necessary.

My husband purchased a Nikon FM10 model for me this Christmas. I am not an avid photographer and this is my first manual camera. However, I really enjoy learning how it works and playing with it. My birthday is rolling around and I am interested getting a telephoto lens from him as a present. However, I don't know much AT ALL about what I am really looking for nor what I need. So far I have considered some sort of 70-300 mm or 75-300 mm. Why? I'm not exactly sure except I like taking photos that are some distance away. I also know I would like to purchase something under $120.00 until I really learn more about this hobby. Can anyone help me with this purchasing decision? I would greatly appreciate any assistance anyone could give me. THANKS!

I have both Nikon F3HP and a FE2 for years. Looking forward to add the new Nikon FM3A to replace my FE2, I know there are plenty of good reviews out there relating to the same topic BUT I am looking forward to read yours before committing - that tells how much I value your thought and the website hat you have created. Thanks for keeping the MF flames alive. Luv from Russia.
