Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. Does anyone remember the Tamron 38-100mm f3.5 (ser.374030)w/72mm cap ? Was it a respctible lens at the time? Got it along with a number of Nikon F bodies when my dad passed.

recently a friend sent me his nikon H4 focusing screen to use with his 28-90mm vivitar macro focusing zoom lens... it is a marvelous focusing screen... with the entire surface capable of focusing... here is its nomenclature:

Type H: Clear Fresnel field with microprism focusing pattern over the entire screen area. Permits rapid focusing on any part of the screen with optimum edge-to-edge brightness in poor light. Available in 4 models (H1-H4) corresponding to particular focal length lenses. I am using H2 on my F3T.

my project involves CloseUp photography of small crusteans critters on soft sand - i use various colored spices sprinkled on the sand to achieve different colors/light. my principle lens will be the nikkor 55mm micro f2.8 with the PK13 extension tube for 1:1 aspect...

MY QUESTION...

since i must return this 'loaned' focus screen i would like to get an H screen for myself. i consulted the nikon focus screen compatibility chart and discovered that i would require the H2 for the 55mm mirco... however, the chart does not include a difference, if there is one, when the PK13 extension tube is affixed? actually, the only number that claims EXCELLENT visibility for the 55mm micro is the H2 the H1 reports vignetting... and the H3 and H4 are not even listed for this lens...

does anyone know the answer to this question? does anyone have an H2 focus screen (for F3hp) or know where i may find one? AND am i considering the correct and best focus screen for CloseUp work such as i have described? it sure LOOKS kewl when i examine things thru the view finder...

thanks HEAPS! for your patience and help...

Complete Newby
have just purchased a tamron 60-300 plus a torkina 28-70 with a nikon F601. I know nought about photography, but because of misspent youth catching up on me I am limited in what hobbies are available to me .My interests are woodworking, gardening, native orchids and native plants. So to make a short story long instead of forgetting these interests I thought that if I could not physically do these I would try photograhing the same things. So I guess I am asking whether the 60-300 would be suitable for shots.
I realise that there re a lot better available, but I have to look at value for money.I also have an old FTn and would have bought the 300 separatly if was sure would fit.Any advice would be greatly accepted. Thanking you Mike from OZ

Marina - I have been to Kenya/Tanzania three times for a total of about 9 weeks in Africa. 100mm is fine for groups of animals or herd shots. 200mm is ideal for very large animals (giraffe and elephant). 300mm is good for many shots, but often is too short. 400mm is the finest single focal length you could use. 500mm could be useful often for more distant animals, and for large birds; but do not feel that this lens is required. 500mm + 1.4X is quite useful for small beautiful colorful birds such as lilac breasted roller and bee eaters. The Nikon VR 80-400mm lens would be excellent but expensive for your F100. If you don't have a Vibration Reduction lens, you need something to steady your long lenses. Beanbags will work, but a short rooftop platform that supports a ball head is MUCH better. Buy the Groofwin pod (Ground Roof Window) from Lenny Rue at www.rue.com It is worth every penny. You can also make your own triangular plastic rooftop base using 2" bolts for legs and a hole in the center to mount a good ball head (Arca Swiss). Yes, the dust is terrible; take a cloth pillow case or plastic garbage bags. The Leica will be good for scenics or groups of animals or elephants very close. Happy honeymoon and good luck!

Anyone know where I find working instructions or a manual, on the net, for my new, second-hand Tamron SP f2.8 - 3.8 35 - 80mm Zoom/Macro?

Hi, My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon in Tanzania on a private safari coupled with a week long trip to Dar-es-Salaam and Zanzibar. We have a Nikon N70 and F100 and two 28-70mm lenses as well as a fixed 400mm Sigma lenses. We would like to know what size lens is suitable for this trip. Is a 400mm too much? What about a 70-300 for one of us and the fixed 400mm for the other? What about a vaariable lenses that goes up to 500mm? We are both avid photographers who are not too sure about how many lenses to take or the size. Also, would anyone recommend taking a Leica M6 on this trip? We already own this camera but I don't feel that I would be able to capture animals quickly as I mainly use it for landscapes and architectural shots. Also, the equipment will probably get very dusty there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Marina

What does the H.C designation mean when used on the Nikon Nikkor-H.C Auto 28mm f3.5 lens? Thank you, Paul Keyser.

I have just purchased a FE2 body. I have no lenses at present. I am thinking I would like a 50mm, 20mm, and 100 or 135mm (macro) lenses. Any suggestions for lenses which offer good performance for the money and work well with a FE2. I'm a canon user in the past so nikons lenses are unknown to me. I think I would like the best 50mm i can afford... and I understand some third party wide angle zooms are good. I am an amateur and use my camera for bush walking and traveling mostly. thank you for any help ian
