Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. Is there a place to see what the associated hoods are that match the respective lens. I have recently aquired several FD lenses and would like to utilize the proper hoods but have no reference to that information.2. From : Doug (dby40509@yahoo.com)

I have a canon AE-1P and recently purchased a Canon Brand 500MM
Mirror/Reflex F8 lens. This had as the standard drop-in for the
drop-in filter the "Canon REGULAR 1x" filter. Can anyone tell
me if this filter is like a 1x close-up filter, just a piece of
glass (or UV filter) etc. I'm ignorant about this.
Also, anyone know where a source would be for more filters for
this item.
How about use of a Canon 2x-B converter. I know the 2x-B is
for less than 300MM, but since this is a fixed F8 on this lens,
I thought it might work with the 500MM lens. I don't understand
the technical reason for the difference in function between the
2x-A and the 2x-B.
Thanks for your help.3. From : Gary (garysargent@compuserve.com)

When using the Canon FD macro function on a 35-70mm zoom lens or the 70-210mm zoom lens does it matter what the zoom setting is? I've had better results close focusing on flowers with the zoom set to 50mm than with the lens set to 35mm. Any suggestions?4. From : karin (karilizbeth1@aol.com)

Austin - There should be a red dot on the hood which should be at the "top" of the lens (12 o'clock position) when you mount the hood. Also the "Canon" logo on the hood should be in this position once you have twisted into place. With the hood in place, the protruding bits should be top and bottom......Hope this helps, Mark.6. Hi, Question please. I have ordered a Canon FD 28mm f2.8 bayonet mount lens. Thrown in the package by the seller is a Canon BW-52B lens hood. It is one that is not symmetrical. In which direction do I orient the two protruding sides of the hood (Up,Down or Left, Right)? Thanks for any thoughts on this.

I previously asked if I needed an AI /AIS lens for my Nikon FM camera. I got mixed messages and am a bit confused. Should I be buying AI / AIS lenses or not ? If the concensus is yes, is Nikon the only manufacturer of AI lenses ? I can't seem to find any other AI lenses other than Nikon. And finally, I don't want to pay Nikon lens prices at this time. Anyother alternatives ? Like bidding on Ebay or is that too risky ?8. From : Hermann Graf (hermann.graf@basf-ag.de)

To Carl Gilbert: Tamron and Tokina are third party manufacturers which offer Nikon compatible MF lenses. Tamron's lenses need an adapter ring, and Tokina has several versions of each lens compatible for the different camera brands. Therefore, "originally AI" means that it is either a Nikon or a Tokina with a Nikon mount. As for the other, probably they had been converted to Nikon AI in a workshop, which is often done with the older Nikon non-AI lenses. Note that mounting non-AI lenses on the Nikon FM2, contrary to the FM, may damage the camera.9. From : Carl Gilbert (csgilbert_ny@hotmail.com)

I am looking for an AI or AIS 24mm lens for my Nikon FM camera.
Question 1 - Is Nikon the only manufacturer of AIS or AI lenses?
If not, where can I find another less expensive lens on the web ?
Question 2 - I was looking in EBAY on a few Nikkor lenses and found the following comments .... please help me interpret because I don't know if they are truly AI / AIS lenses. Here were some of the statements about their lenses.
"modified to fit AI mount", "converted to AI compatability" and specs says "manual focus Nikon AI-s mount". HELP !10. To Carl Gilbert: AI stands for "Aperture Indexing", that's how the lens report the aperture to the camera's metering system. When not present, metering can be a problem. See details in the following websites:
www.tfb.com/oce/ynikais.htm and www.cameraquest.com/aidaiais.htm.
