Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. TO APOSTOLOS: Hi Apostolos. Adorama's price for Zeiss 50 f/1.4 is 116.000 grd. I believe it is their import (what is called grey market maybe), so the price is very good. Don't know what quarantee they give. The price for Nikkor AF D 50 f/1.4 is around 125.000grd, and this is street price with the quarantee of the Greek distributor. The MF version you ask about will be higher no doubt. Of course, list prices are higher for both brands. I don't consider Zeiss lenses that expensive, at least for prime lenses. These are some prices from Adorama's kataloque:28 mm f/2.8 for 125.000grd, 35 mm f/2.8 for 119.000, 85 mm f/1.4 for 285.000, 28-70 mm f/3.5-4.5 for 268.000, 60 mm f/2.8 macro for 350.000(!). You might allready know these prices, so I haven't help much. But what is the point of this comparison exept in the case you want to build a system from zero? ( I found my self in that position about two years ago, chose the Nikon but Contax- Zeiss will always be my dream).
Since no one else here might be intrested in Greek prices, you may contact me personally. Bye.

Could anyone tell me the average street price of Nikon 50 f/1.4 AIS and Zeiss 50 f/1.4, purchased new, in London? I'm asking for the price of these two lences, in order to have a yardstick by which to judge Nikon and Contax photo gear price differences in England and Greece. If anyone, though, is familiar with prices in these two countries, I would be grateful to hear from him/her.

TO WALT: The Fuji Finepix S1 Pro uses Nikon's F60 body as its basis.Exposure metering can not be done with AI, AI-S lenses as you say, with AI-P no 3D matrix, but matrix and center weighting can be done.

TO VLAD:

The FUJI Fine Pix S-1 uses a Nikon N80 (F80) body as its basis. The N80 cannot couple with the metering connections on the AI and AIS series Nikkor lenses, including the AI-P. This was one glitch in Nikon's up to this point effort at backward compatibility. My wife has an N80 andwould liketo be able to use some of my AIS lenses, but unfortunately cannot and still meter with the camera.

and an 0 on the F ring instead of A for the automatic set
Photos are good but a little soft in the edge and partial metering is absolutly necessary to avoid underexposure .
Can somebody tell me the year product of this old lens and what coating is used for it ?( SC or SSC ? )
I am also back from an trip on the sea with 3 rols with my T90 and fd 35-1O5 F 3.5 What a beautiful lens !! very sharp
Very nice and useful for travel

Hi George. My take on your query: I asked myself a similar question a while back when I had a chance to buy an 85mm L versus non L glass 85mm. I then came up with the Erasmus cost/benefit algorithm. I'll summarize it as follows: If the L lens is less than 2.5 times the cost of the standard FD lens, go for the L lens. You buy a 50mm L to shoot at full aperture where it excels. And it is clearly superior at wide open apertures. ( The FD 1.4 is no slouch though, so there is little lust for the 1.2L I believe). For the 85, OTOH, a little less sharpness at wide aperture turns out to be a plus, as in for shooting portraits, see? Besides, my golf partners here at the African Queen remind me of such materialistic considerations as resale value and the prestige of the red ring and whatnot. Buy the L model if you can find one for only 200 PS. Youll be happier in the long run. Obviously it's not a Black and White issue. Let's hear from other lensniks. Cheers, and good Canoneering in the UK... Yours truly, Erasmus B. Black
