Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

In replying to Mr. ROBBIE's question on the lenses for FM-10 at the Nikon FM Board:As for 50 mm lenses, you can use AF and MF versions. You may get the cheap MF f/1.8 and AF f/1.8 (these don't have the same optics) or the expensives MF f/1.4 and AF f/1.4. All these lenses are above 4.1 rated in MTF tests (look at photodo.com) Mine MF 50mm f/1.8 does not perform as it should, but still isn't bad. Note that in generally, AF versions aren't as good as MF versions in manually focusing, but you will not have any problem with the 50 mm's. My opinion: if you can afford go for the AF f/1.4. If you can't, go for the AF f/1.8. MF f/1.4 is too expensive and MF f/1.8 ..., well, I still don't know if mine is just a bad sample. As for other lenses: FM 10 functions OK with all AF lenses, Nikkors or third party, but manual focusing on many of them isn't the best. Hope it helps.2. From : Karl (kalam12505@aol.com)

I am thinking about purchasing a Canon FD 500 mm Reflex 8.0. This lens looks terrific but I was unable to focus the lens at infinity. I tried focussing on the moon to bring out more detail but the image remained blurry. I am able to focus on items within the distance scale of the lens but things in the "infinity" range cannot be focussed. Is this a characteristic of the design of this lens or is this lens defective? Thanks in advance.3. From : David Young (Baseluna@home.com)

I've recently purchased a pair of Rokinon 80 x 30 binoculars for some general astronomy viewing and would like to find out more about this Japanese manufacturer and the general quality of the optics involved. I cannot seem to find anything on the internet about this company. Would someone out there please lend me some assistance?4. From : Jaume Munar (jaumemunar@eresmas.net)

BOKEH: Today I have known about this concept at this address: http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Workshop/8827/TamronBokeh.html where the author says "Bokeh seems to be an issue nowadays. It means the way that out of focus highlights are rendered by a particular lens". Do you have more information about? Thank you very much. Have a nice day! Jaume ;-)5. eading Mike Johnson's advice on lenses I can most certainly endorse what he says, especially about never selling a good lens. I have, like Mike, done just that on a number of occasions - but the one I regret most was a Zeiss 85mm f1.4 Planar. This went the way of all my Contax manual SLR gear when I went over to Canon autofocus. Though I find the autofocus used with zoom lenses a boon, I still miss the Zeiss 85mm. It was bulky, heavy and slow to use but it produced cracking good images when I did my part as the photographer. I wonder where it is now and who may be using it. Who ever they are, they got a really great lens - I just hope they have cared for it as I did.6. From : Torkild Gude, Denmark (hamsjelv@hotmail.com)

Hello. I have a question about Canon lenses. Is are FD lenses have better opticaly quality than the older FL lenses? I have the chance to buy an FL 55mm f1.2 and an FL 135mm f2.5 lens, but I don't want to do this if the FL lenses are not as good quality as the FD. Any opinion would help. Thanks.8. To C.R.: C.R. - Most of the third party lenses for Canon FD mounts work and communicate the same as Canon lenses. However, in general, Canon lenses are better quality than third party lens. The Canon 35-105 f3.5 is an very nice lens with a very useful range. I liked mine so much I bought a spare. For longer lengths, the 80-200s tend to be better than the 70-210, with the 80-200 L series being VERY nice. In third party, the older Vivitar Series 1 70-210 is about the only one I would consider buying.9. From : Alex (alexham1@optushome.com.au)

Like many others, I'm also the proud original owner of an A1, which I bought in 1980. Now I'm considering buying a zoom lens (probably a second-hand as I'm told new FD lenses are no longer available) but need some advice. I understand that the lens and the camera communicate with each other, with the lens passing on settings information to the camera. If I bought a non-Canon lens (say a Vivitar, Tamron, Sigma, etc) will it communicate with the camera in the same way as the Canon lenses do? Which non-Canon lens is a good match (mounting, connexions) to the A1? Many thanks.
