Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. About TELECONVERTERS: 1)Why are there two differents Canon FD 2x Teleconverters, "A" and "B", and why FD 1,4 X is also named "A"? I have seen that "A" are for lenses equal or longer to 300 mm, and for zooms reaching 300 mm, and for the FD 200/4 macro. Is there any problem using "A" with lenses shorter than 300 mm? Are these differences because of the optical design? 2) I have a Canon FD 2x A and a Kenko 2x CFE Teleplus MC7. Might I go for a Canon B? 3)I have some Tamron lenses (35-80/2.8-3.5 SP, 80-200/2.8 SP LD and Tamron 500 SP. Would you use that Canon A and Kenko, would you go for a Canon B, or would you go for a Tamron SP Teleconverter? Thank you your suggestions. Have a nice day! Jaume ;-) Spain.2. I am interested in adding a 28mm PC lens to my system. Can anyone tell me which Nikon bodies (including older models) will be compatable with this lens.3. From : Melkonina (mtma@bluewin.ch)

CONVERSION OF NON-1I TO AI-MODIFIED lenses. I am looking for a work shope which still can convert my old lenses used of F2 Nikon. Would like to use the converted lenses on F80 (manual). Preferably Hong Kong or anywhere in Europe. Jack, mtma@bluewin.ch

*DICK*: in replying your question posted on the Nikon F3 MB section "....DOES ANYONE KNOW IF NIKON IS GOING TO PHASE OUT THE AIS TYPE LENS. THERE SEEMS TO BE LESS OF A SELECTION FOR BRAND NEW AIS LENS ON THE MARKET. DOES THIS MEAN THE END IS NEAR FOR THE F3????? ..." Things here are very realistic. Everyone is hyped with autofocusing and it is not very logical for guys at Nikon to think the entire office at Japan used to make a good living out of all those manual focus SLR and lenses for the last few decades. The recent N65 and N80 was even a joke to see the company trying to force their own followers to discard their manual focus lenses because they want you to buy their latest AF lenses. These bodies will only allow a non-AF lens to mount onto and takes AE picture WITHOUT providing data exposure info inside the viewfinder ! What it means is, if you intend to use manual focus Nikkor lens on that two camera, well - photography will just behave like any idiot camera because you cannot control exposure because it won't show you anything ! Now, you are worrying the AI-S will phase out ? Oh, Dick, they have started doing that at least 5 years back and such thing is not began only now... the only consolation for Nikon fans is: they didn't gallantly announced it as the Canon EOS or the Minolta did that during the mid '90 and we manage to prolong the good lifespan of manual focus days more than a decade longer..5. Relating to the URL provided by Ketil at the Canon T90 Message Board regarding "How to determine the age of your EOS camera or lens". A question, only for curiosity: I have a duplicator 2xA, with the inscription T700. According to that, it would have been manufactured in July, 1979. And "00"? And another observation: I bought, new, my 50/3.5 macro; it came with the Extension Tube FD25 in the same box. The codes are V102 for the objective, and V202 for the tube. I bought a second hand 28/2.8 without code. Have a nice day! Jaume ;-)

Gary - Nope, it just proved that the enlarging lens used was bad, or dirty. I can see the differences between my friend's Albinar and my Canon lens on prints made at MY lab. The flare (loss of contrast) when shooting up sun is very dramatic.7. From : Rick Matheny (matheny@snet.net)

I recently purchased a Nikkormat 500mm F8 reflex lens. It is the old model that takes an 88mm screw-in lens cap. Did Nikon ever make a lens shade for this lens? I know that the newer version does have a lens shade(HN-27), but it is an 82mm screw-in shade. Any advice out there?8. From : Gary (garysargent@compuserve.com)

Terry: Well, I think I proved my point that if the Canon lens to after market Albinar zoom requires more than Kodak photo processing on print film to show much of a difference in quality then why pay more for the name brand lens. I agree that the Albinar lens has a flare problem and certainly couldn't function with a 2XB extender compared to the Canon 80-210mm. My test photos were hand-held and with the sun in the late afternoon--the best time of day. Which lens do I use the most? Why the Canon zoom, of course. Mechanically and cosmetically it's better but I think the results on print film, compared to the after market lenses, are somewhat over-rated.

Charles - The FD-EOS convertors do not retain aperture control. You will only be able to work in stopped down manual mode. Better to buy a second T90 (what I did).

philip kollitis - For quaranteed used lenses and accesories try KEH (www.keh.com). They arent't the cheapest by they stand by what they sell and if anything they grade conservatively (the lens is probably better than their grading indicates).
