Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. I just purchased a Nikkor 500mm F8 Reflex lens. Most of the web sites state that it takes an 82mm filter on the front. However, that is not correct. It is bigger than 82, but I can't find how what size in order to purchase a UV filter for it. Might you know?

I've just become the proud owner of a Nikon Nikkor 35mm f2 Ai lens, I used to have a 2.8 but decided that I needed the extra stop, has anyone had any experience with this lens? is it as sharp as reputation has it? Thanks in Advance Mike Wilde!

GOURVENNEC PHILIPPE - Any zoom lens has more problem with flare than a prime. Because if the range of this zoom, the hood is only marginally effective, it just isn't big enough. I just use my hand to shade the lans when shooting. If the sun is in the shot, you will get multiple sun/aperture images. Porter's has a rubber hood that folds to go from wide angle to tele that I may try.

KEITH: I will say that FD 50mm f/1.2L you got may be a defective unit. Usually for any New FD-type of lens to have its aperture blades "missing" when unmounted from the camera, the reason is the lens may have been locked into working position without being mounted on the camera. However, when a New FD-type of lens has been locked in this manner, it is not possible to mount it into the camera. But since you are still able to mount the lens into your camera, this is not the cause. It is better for you to return the lens and get a refund or free service/replacement parts to correct this problem.

I have a big problem. I bought a used Canon FD 50mm 1.2L lens a few days ago and I had just received it in the mail. All of the FD lenses I have seen have their aperture blade shut, but this one is open all the way (I can see all the way through, and I don't see the blades at all). I tried putting it on the camera and firing a few shots, unfortunately, the blades didn't do anything. Can anyone tell me anything about this situation and what I should do besides sending it back to get my money. Thanks.

Robert - If you want the best in that range, get a Canon 80-200 L series. The 80-200 non-L is also a very nice lens, and about half the price or less. The 70-210 is not bad, but not as good as the 80-200s. I would hold out for a Canon. BTW there are a couple of 200 f2.8 IF lenses on eBay today.

OURVENNEC PHILIPPE - Buy the 35-105 f3.5. This lens is an excellent performer, on par with the Canon L series lenses. I liked mine so much, I bought a second one. The later 35-105 f3.5-4.5 is not as good a lens. It does have its uses. It is smaller and lighter than the f3.5 version, and it is a one touch zoom and focus. The other thing is, it uses 58mm filters, just like the longer (70-210, 80-200, 100-300) Canon zoom lenses. But for the best lens, get the 35-105 f3.5.

*Bill* The lens hood is HN-24 Screw-in type. Check out the F3 Message Board for my posting. Hope it helps.

I also just bought a used Nikkor AF 70-210 D(f1:4-5.6). Its really in pristine condition, but the seller didnt have an instruction manual or a lens hood. Any idea where I can get some help on using the features in a manual mode and I dont even know what mm or model lens hood to get. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
