Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. I am interested in fabricating an adaptor that goes between a video camera and a 50mm to Cannon FD lens adaptor. I am having trouble identifying the type of threads used in international camera manufacturing. Can anyone help me determine the thread standard. Where can I get a copy of the standard? Thanks.2. I am looking for a depth of field chart for a Nikon f1.8 45mm lens that came on a Petri 7S camera. Please help me find one. The camera is a viewfinder type and not an SLR, but it takes wonderful pictures especially potrait type. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------3. From : Kaipin (kaipinc@tm.net.my)

GIORGOS: These magnifications are to indicate the size of the subject at the lens' closest focusing distance at the said focal lengths. A 1x magnification is life-size -- the subject's size on the 24x36mm frame is the same as the real thing, so a 0.08X and 0.23x means they are the ratios (or how far away) from life-size magnification. To bring the subject three times closer to your zoom lens are: 1) Use a close-up filter attachment, like a 4x or 8x type; 2) use a 600mm lens 3) use a Canon FD Macro lens. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a CANON zoom FD 70-210 mm f/4 lens and i want to buy a telephoto lens. What does it mean "Magnification 0.08X at 70mm, 0.23X at 210mm"? What kind of telephoto will bring an object, ley's say, three times closer than my zoom?5. From : Nantes (nantes989@hotmail.com)

##Davis##: To supplement Mr. MC's earlier posting, first you need to ensure your 28mm PC lens is an AI lens and work with an AI camera body. Next, although PC lenses can used as an normal wideangle, but because due to the nature of the mechanism with perspective control (Tilt and Shift), the lens diaphragm has to be designed to operate in manual preset type where there is a preset ring provided for convenience when setting the diaphragm to the shooting aperture. And because there is no meter coupling shoe on these lenses (The aperture Ring is at the outer front portion), the exposure measurement must be done via "stop-down metering" method, in a manual focus Nikon camera, that means you have to depress the depth of field preview button to adjust the aperture until you find the appropriate working aperture to use (For older AI bodies, remember to lift the meter coupling pin on the lens mount first). Underexposure may arise from many other factors, I think its is not right to conclude it is caused by the lens. Note: IF I am correct, the current Canon electronic EF shift lenses (NOT the FD series) are the only batch you can find on the market that will work in open aperture metering which means full automatic diaphragm is restored and no stopped down metering method is required. Hope these info also helps.6. From : MC (mclau@pc.jaring.my)

*** David *** I don't have the manual for the PC lens, but in the case of under exposure, do remember to meter before you shift the lens. Forgeting to stop down the lens, on the other hand, would result in over exposure. Hope it helps.7. From : David Slater (senior@shoal.net.au)

I have a Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 PC shift lens. Help!!! Can anyone supply a manual, or written users instructions? Some of my photos are badly underexposed. What do I do? Thanks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------8. From : Chuck Hester (imgmkr52@uswest.net)

The large mass of camera lenses today are confusing to say the least. Beginners often think the best lens will produce the best image. The truth is the image is only as good as the person the using the camera. I have seen people using the best equipment and only get marginal results at best. After a certain amount time they become discouraged and give up a great hobby because they are not getting the results they expected based on the money they have spent. The first thing that people need to do before spending a tremendous amount of money on pro-level equipment is to gain some good basic knowledge and then apply it untill they become comfortable with the hobby. Don't go out and spend a ton of money for an F-5 and a bag full of AF lens expecting to get fantastic images it just doesn't work that way. A good used camera like an FE-2 and a 50mm lens is the place to start. Take your time and most of all have FUN because that is really what is all about.9. From : Sara Jean (sjprincipessa@aol.com)

Hi, I have a Vivitar Series 1 camera lens for a Nikon 35mm camera. Can anyone tell me if this lens will fit a Nikon FE2 camera? Is the lens compatible with the AI series? Thanks.10. I am considering purchasing a Tamron 60-300mm zoom lens for my AE-1 and I would like to know if there is any difference or quirks in the operation of the camera when using a non Canon Lens. Will the AE mode work ok? Also I assume I will have to buy an adapter to mount this to my camera. Are these adapters readily available? Thanks PS: This is a great site for Canon owners!! Nice job ------------------------------------------------------------------------
