This is the first lens which started the craze on exotic zoom lens design competition among the zoom lenses makers. It bridges 10X zoom range for the first time in professional quality zoom.
When popular photography first reported this, the editor termed it as " one of the best kept secret from Canon".
The next "upgrade version should see Canon incorporates it latest lens design - "image stabliser" technology into this lens.
There are some arguments, commenting on practicality on this lens, particularlly on its relative smaller maximum aperture on the longer focal length - well, I don't think there is any major drawback, given today's modern high speed films and emulsion technology. After all, main applicationn for a lens type like this exotic zoom are mainly in the field of reportage, news and sport arena and I think premium image quality is not the priority to their eventual photo editors who made the selection of images taken.
Further, it will add a lot of weight and cost if the maximum aperture is given another one more stop.
A slight compromise on flexibility and you get mobility in return not to mention it helps to save another thousand or two Malaysian Ringgit, why not ?
I went to an major underwriting event lately in Putra World Trade Centre and found quite a number of young news photographers are equipted with this lens on their respective Canon's bodies. I was thinking, well now we catches up with high tech stuffs, don't we ?
