Back in September of 2000, I received that email and didn't believe it. When I went on the the official government website of the BLM which confirmed the authenticity of the photograph and of the contents, and even allowed me to download the full-sized photo. You asked for the photographer's email address, which the last known address is john_mccolgan@ak.blm.gov. This may no longer work, though. You'll find that he's been interviewed several times by many people, and his story is pretty much told where I found the email address: http://www.publicsafety.net/john_m.htm Furthermore, you can now find the photo at its official home at: http://www.nifc.gov/gallery/ Please note that the copyright holder is the U.S. BLM, which means all anyone needs to use the photo is to give proper attribute.
