This was a scene from the 2000/2001 Miss Malaysia/Chinese International Pageant finals held at the Arena of Stars in Genting Highlands. The winner was 24-year old Law Shiau Pyng from the Northwest state of Kelantan. Apart from the main title, she also won four other subsidiary titles including Miss Photogenic. The event was telecast live and photographers covering it have to shoot from 50 metres away from the stage. No flash illumination was allowed and fast film as well as fast lenses. I shot the event with a Canon EOS-1V and EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM telephoto lens and the only photographer using ISO 400 color negative film. The rest of them relied on ISO 800 and 1600 color negative films. Most of the time, the light level was lower than what was shown in this photo (which was brightened up since the winner has been announced) and those who saw it live on their TV screen would have seen the closing credits appearing during this period.
