The financial crisis in Asia during the '97 saw change of governments in many Asian countries. The political scenes in Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea and even Taiwan were never be the same again. Malaysia was not spared, and gone through a stage of political uncertainty as well. Differing thoughts between the reigning government headed by Dr. Mahathir and younger generations who was victimized by the crises with rising cost of living and devaluation of currency, carrying the slogan of "reform" replicated from the success of overthrown of ruling government in Indonesia. Generally. many young who wish for the deputy prime minister to head the ruling government but was then sentenced and jailed by court later on grounds of various accusations of conspiracy. The split in opinion has seen street demonstrations to protest. This has an ultimate long term effect on the political scenario in Malaysia which seen a split in unity among the Malay community and the gain in support for pure Islamic based political party.
