Question: >How confident are you in the FA's AMP metering ? Do you use it often or revert to center weighted metering ?
That has actually got a point of concern to me lately!
I think the matrix metering is good in a lot of 'general' situations, but
if it get's realy difficult it is NOT good, and above all: Unpredictable! I
use it for general shooting, in real difficult situations, i try to
'spot'-meter de different subjects with the centreweighted metering and
make my own setting (use thumbrules like measure black -> expose 2 stops
under or white + 2 stops over.
Problem is to my opinion that it has 5 elements: If you use a 2/3 1/3 view
in landscapes.. 2 elements are fully metering sky, the other to are
metering mixed sky/ground + the centere meters sky => Good exposure of sky
but NOT of the ground.
As long as the sky is clear with some contrast or even directly into the
sun.. it's not so bad to my opinion (just inpredictable), BUT: as soon as
sky is equally-grey (Than it reflexts a lot of sunlight in a very diffuse
way) things go realy wrong. Mostly one gets UNDERexposed pictures (I
usually work on slide). (My FA is recently checked and adjusted by Nikon
Holland.. so it should be OK). Seldom i get a overexposed slide.
More remarks: in situations with the camera 90 degrees rotated, failures occure quite often! In very dark situations with times up to 30 seconds it performs amazingly well to me. Others also report bugs on exposure:

So, to conclude: If it light situation gets difficult, i switch to centre
weighted metering, since this simply gives me the opportunity to measure
objects and make my own settings (either manually, but often by using the
exposure correction). I think one should realise that the cemara will never know what the photografer wants.. so whenever this is doubtfull: use your own cettings on centreweighted or fully manual!
BTW: In manual and (not sure) with TTL the metering is always centre
weighted whatever the setting of the metering button is!
ok.. I hope this will add some extra to youre search for information and
experiences, if there is any more (specific) question feel free to ask.
btw: I'm just a average amature photographer, shooting around 20 films a
year and discussion results in the fotoclub. The FA is not very common over
here in Holland.I think it IS a beautifull camera, despite the few shortcomings! I went looking for a other body lately (just to see) and i found only the 801s (8008s) and the F90(x) giving me more/better facilities as the FA (having AutoFocus and still all the possibilities of the FA(I must have a DOF peview for example)), BUT they do not have the matrix metering on AI converted lenses!
