Shutter-Priority Automatic Exposure Control
Setting the mode selector to S and lens aperture to the minimun aperture makes the shutter-priority mode operate. Using ASA 100 film and 50mm fl.4 lens, set the shutter speed dial to 1/125 sec. Then, the FA's shutter-priority automatic exposure control is made as represented by the darker line in the graph.
Since the 50mm fl.4 lens has aperture f/numbers from fl.4 to f16, suitable aperture to match the 1/125 sec you set is selected within this range depending upon the scene brightness.
If suitable f/number for the 1/125 sec is available to match the scene brightness, then the suitable aperture the FA selected is shown via LCD inside the viewfinder display.
If the scene is darker than the light value determined by the combination of f1.4 (max. aperture) and the 1/125 sec. you set, the FA automatically overrides your choice by selecting slower speed down to one (l) sec. In this case, automatically compensated speed is shown via LCD instead of f/number. If the scene is still darker than the lowest combination of fl.4 and one sec., then "" is displayed via LCD, meaning that the scene is too dark exceeding the FA's metering range.
To the contrary, if the scene is brighter than the combination of 1/125 and fl6 (min. aperture), again the FA automatically overrides your choice by selecting faster speed than you set up to 1/4000 sec and automatically compensated speed is displayed via LCD. If the scene is brighter than the combination of fl6 and 1/4000 see, "" is displayed, meaning that the scene is too bright exceeding the FA's metering range.
As you may understand from the above, if the slower speed than you se-t is displayed via LCD instead of f/number, max. aperture (fl.4) is selected. To the contrary, if the faster speed is selected, then the minimum aperture (f16) is in operation (Remember, in this discussion, a 50mm f1.4 lens is used, it may select f32 for a Micro Nikkor).
What will happen if you inadvertently or intentionally set the aperture other than the minimum aperture? Don't worry, you can still obtain correct exposure although operational range may be limited depending upon the aperture you set.
The line shows the exposure control when you set the aperture at f5.6, not the minimum aperture. In this case, if the scene brightness is within the range determined by the combination of 1/125 sec and apertures ranged from f1.4 to f5.6 (your set aperturej, then the correct exposure is obtained and f.No. is displayed via LCD. If scene is darker than the combination of fl.4 and 1/125 see, then slower speed is automatically set by cybernetic override and displayed by the LCD. If scene is still darker exceeding the lowest limit of metering range (i.e. the combination of fl.4 and l see), "" is displayed via LCD.
To the contrary, if the scene is brighter than the light value determined by the combination of 1/125 and f5.6 (your set aperture), then smaller aperture cannot be obtained because of your misseting of the aperture ring. In this case, the FA overrides your choice by selecting faster speed than 1/125, and then display it via LCD. If the scene is still darker than the combination of f5.6iand 1/4000 sec., then FEE, not "", is displayed meaning that you misses the aperture ring to settings other than the minimum aperture.
Note: With an AI-modified Nikkor lens Reflex Nikkor, PC-Nikkor, old type teleconverters (TC-200, TC-300 or TC-14), PK ring or bellows attachment attached, the LCD shows
', instead of the aperture selected by the FA, because max.- aperture indexing post is not provided on these equipment. If your set speed is inappropriate for the scene brightness, automatically compensated speed is displayed via LCD as usual. Also note that because of the same reason, multi-pattern metering does not function with these equipment; only the centerweighted metering does.
