Dear Reader I am an avid buff that owns Canon, Leica, Hasselblad, and Nikon systems. These companies offer fine products lines, which cater to any and all 35mm or 6x6 need. Regarding the Canon F1 (New). In my opinion, it is the best built 35mm SLR of all time. The fit and finish of the Canon F1 (New) put my Leica M4-P to shame. It provides a great core for a true high-end photo-system. The meter and control placement are both excellent. I seldom use mirror lock-up and TTL flash. Hence, for my use, the Nikon F1 (New) is a better choice over the excellent Nikon F3hp. It is also my opinion that the F2 is the best Nikon ever made. I own a new Nikon F2 in chrome, but the Canon F1 (New) is a better product in all aspects (e.g., automation, build quality, meter, etc.). At $500 to $600 US, the Canon F1 (New) is a great value. It will last far longer than any of the current high-end products (e.g., Canon EOS 1, Leica R8, Nikon F5, etc.) made today. Thank You Russell Ruggiero P.S: As saying goes "They just don't build them like that any more", is quite applicable to the Canon F1 (New).

HELP! I've just acquired a Canon F1 (original). I'm not sure if it's got a fault or it's just a fuction (peculiarity) of the beast. I've connected, via the flash sync lead, a Vivitar 283 flash gun to the flash PC socket mounted on the side of the camera body. The flash will only fire on 1/125 to 1/2000th speeds but not on 1/60th and below. Can any one advise please Many thanks Tony Alston London

Just picked up my second F1n from KEH. We nt to check the battery...2000 speed, ASA 100, and could not get the needle to move to where it's supposed to. My first was the same. Battery is new and checked out perfect at voltage. Camera's meter is dead on compared to two, other Canons and my Weston meter. If the battery check is all that's wrong, I canlive with that. Love the monster!

RE: BL vs NewFD mount lenses. I would not worry too much about the mount, unless you use heavy lenses...and then it MAY be a consideration. I would suggest you consider the NewFD lenses simply because they are better coated and typically of newer design. If you have an F-1N (as in New F-1) with the AE finder, the NewFD lense aperture shows up in the viewfinder. I like the positive locking of the NewFD mount, in that it clicks knowing it's on completely, and you have to deliberately press a button to take it off.

can you discuss advantages and disadvantages of breechlock versus bayonet mount for FD lenses? can you suggest a source/link for such a comparison? I am in the market for additional lenses for my F-1. Thanks JC

I recently purchased a power winder fn for my Canon new f1. I am having problems getting it to work properly. When I attatch it to the body the camera meter is always on, even with the camera shutter and both winder shutters in the off position. This obviously is not good for the batteries. Also the autotimer beeps when I try to take a picture, and the shutter will not fire. I have read the manuals, but I still can't determine if I am overlooking something or that I have a problem. Any help will be appreciated. Dan
