Soul ... the nF-1 has both an electrical and mechanical shutter.
If a battery is inserted ... the camera disables the mechanical shutter mechanism. When you removed the battery, the mechanical shutter is active.
If the battery is too low it may not have sufficient power to trip the electrical shutter (even though the light meter looks active).
There is a battery check button ... though I do not remember where it is.

Tom,
Presuming you are referring to the updated version of the first F1: The most noticeable difference is the plastic tip on the wind on lever, the stand off on the lever is 30 degrees - instead of 15 deg. Closer examination will reveal a maximum ASA setting of 3200, and a lock on the PC socket. The updated version had around a dozen modifications, however nothing that radically altered the appearance.6. From : Tom (boyzinc3@aol.com)

How does one know if he has the original (old) Canon F-1 or the newer Canon F-1 (n)? Is their a difference in appearance?7. From : Lee (zr1lee@netzero.net)

Unfortunately, my baby, FD 85x300mm fell out of it's hard case and shattered the outer large element. Does anybody know if someone can repair/replace the element?
I also have a 50mm 1.2 with a broken shutter arm that is broke off (square tab in back), any help in bringing these lenses back from the dead would be highly appreciated!
Thanks,
Lee

New Canon F1 uses the FDn lenses to bring its best. Old FL lenses require Stopped Down Metering. Something like the Nikon non-Ai with the newer Ai Nikon body back in 1978. Press the depth of field preview and meter with the preset aperture and release the lens - old way of metering. The aperture ring of an FD lens must be removed from "A"http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/manuals/canonnewf1manual/htm/flash.html#Shooting
also refer to the stopped down metering section here:
