The Dayak and the Island of Borneo

I believe there are still many people out there who are not so sure of the exact location of this island. Perhaps, you might know the location of the island but then have very little knowledge about its geographical elements, people and most important, the culture. Also, I believe that those who have read the book about this island or had the opportunity to visit this special island half a century ago...would have experienced some strange atmosphere. The Head Hunter and the Dayak used to be closely associated with the land years ago. On these day, the Dayak known for their warm hospitality, beautiful culture and humble people.

Forget the past and try to get to know the present for its worth more. Come to Borneo and experience the uniqueness of this island. Today, Borneo people are in every way competent to the rest of the world. The credibility of Dayak to unite as a modern nation is no doubt. The Dayaks boast a group of professionals ranging from medical doctors, architects, engineers, pilots, lawyers, economic expert and business magnates. Education is power, knowledge is the core of success. By nature, the dayaks are great warriors.

The dayak goes cyber. I'm the one of those few Dayaks who is involved in cyberworld as a professional. I have never dreamed to be a web designer for internet while I was in high school. It was after I enroled as a student at MARA Institut of Technology, Shah Alam, I realised that I aspired to be a graphic designer. My parent wanted me to be a doctor or lawyer but my interest is more to art side...I want to use my right brain more.

I took a risk by enrolling into graphic design course! No one in my hometown wanted to be designer. "Not such a good future", they used to said. I understand this. I'm the pioneer in this field among my family. As a rule breaker, I went ahead with my decision.

It was July 1994, I went abroad. There was only one reason for my decision (going oversea): is to be different. I like something new for myself as well as I like challange. I choose New Zealand as my destination. There I met a lot of creative people, we shared the same interest... "design-art". Cold weather, green pastures and mountain snow were an inspiration. Here was where the West met East or North met South (Malaysia-New Zealand). The essence of these two countries kinda melted together in my work (design). As one of my mentors use to say, "think global, act local" That phrase is still means a lot to me though.
