Viewfinder/ information: Fixed eye-level roof mirror. 0.7x magnification and 90% coverage. Center AF marks, wide AF frame, partial metering circle. 7-segment LCD displays (Yellow-Green) numeric values, textual display, in-focus indicator, exposure display, shutter speed, aperture setting, Red-Eye reduction lamp, flash ready, panorama frame (set with external lever), and other indications.

Standard Dioptre: Adjusted to -1. (18.5 mm eye relief).
Focusing Screen: Fixed, full-surface new laser-matte screen marked with focusing points, partial metering circle.
Shutter: Vertical-travel, focal plane shutter with all speeds electronically controlled. Front and rear shutter curtains both have dedicated electromagnetic release control. (Curtain speed: 6.3 ms/24 mm).
Shutter Speeds: 30 to 1/2000 sec., Bulb; X-sync at 1/90 sec. Can be set in 1/2-stop increments.
External LCD: Shutter speed, aperture setting, film speed, multiple exposure count, Red-Eye reduction, self-timer display, film status, exposure display, battery check, and other indications.
NOTE: LCD Panel In time, the camera's LCD (liquid-crystal display) panel indications may become light and difficult to read. If this happens, have it replaced (at cost) by a Canon Service Center. At low temperatures, the display response of the LCD panel may become slower. And at 60 degrees C or higher temperatures. the display may blacken. In either case, the display will return to normal at room temperature.Autofocus:
AF Control System: TTL-SIR (Secondary Image Registration) phase detection type using 3-point cross type BASIS (Base-stored Image Sensor). (| + |). One of the following two AF modes is set automatically depending on the picture taking mode. The shutter does not release until focusing is achieved. One-Shot AF: Autofocus locks when focusing is achieved. Al Servo AF: for automatic switching between One-Shot AF and predictive AF for moving subjects.
Focus Point Selection: The focusing point can be selected by camera (Automatic) or by user (Manual).
AF Working Range: EV 1.5 - 18 at ISO 100
AF Auxiliary Light: Built-in auxiliary light fires when necessary
Exposure Control
Light Metering: Composite SPC for TTL full-aperture metering (6-zone evaluative, 9.5% partial at center, and Centre-Weighted averaging) with shutter speed-priority AE, aperture-priority AE, Intelligent program AE (5 settings), depth-of-field AE and metered manual. Five PIC (Programmed Image Control) modes: Portraiture, land scape, Close-up, Sports and Night scene.
Metering Range: EV 2 to 20 conversion with 50min f/1.4 lens at ISO 100) (normal temperature)
Film Speed Setting: ISO 25-5000 automatically set in 1/3 step increments according to DX code. Can also be set manually from ISO 6-6400 in 1/3 step increments.
Exposure Compensation: ±2 EV (in 1/2-stop increments) Not available in PIC modes.
Auto Exposure Bracketing: +/- 2 stops in 1/2-stop increments, Three continuous exposures taken in sequence: one under, one at the standard metered value, and one over.

Film Transport: Film Loading / Film Advance: Automatic. One of two modes is automatically set: Single Frame and Continuous (1 fps maximum). Align film leader at mark, then close the camera back for prewind loading. First, the entire roll is wound on the take-up spool. Then each time a picture is taken, the film advances back into the cartridge.
Film Rewind: Automatically rewinds at the end of the roll. Mid-roll rewind is possible
Frame Counter: Counts down on external LCD panel (counts up during prewind loading).
Film advance speed: 1 fpsBuilt-in Flash
Type: Retractable, TTL automatic exposure flash housed in the pentaprism. By-pass control system. Auto pop-up head. TTL auto flash control (fires automatically in backlight and low-light conditions). Off-the-film metering with a 4-zone flash metering sensor covering three flash metering points.
Red-Eye reduction lamp (AF-assist beam emitter): provided. Applicable to all shooting modes. Lights when hutter button is depressed half way, shutter can be release immediately.

Flash Duration: 1 ms or less
Others: Camera Shake alert: Provided for full auto and PIC modes -EXCEPT Night Scene mode. Shutter Speed blinks if speed is too slowthan the reciprocal
Recycling Time: Approximately 2 seconds. Lights when ready.
Red-Eye Reduction Function: Red-Eye Reduction Lamp Lights while the shutter button is pressed halfway and focusing and metering are achieved.
Self-Timer: Electronically controlled with a 10-sec. with beeper tone
Multiple Exposures: Up to nine (9) exposures can be present. Automatically clears upon completion
Remote Control: 3-pin remote controlExternal Flash: Hot shoe socket for external flash for E-TTL, A-TTL and TTL Programmed Flash Exposure Control with dedicated speedlites. Manual flash is possible. NOTE: Although it is possible to use third party flash units with the camera but Canon warns when using an external flash unit, an EOS-dedlcaled Speedlite is also recommended. Using a flash unit (equipped with several contacts on the hot shoe toot) dedicated to a different-brand camera or using a high-voltage batterytype flash unit or accessories may result in camera misoperation or malfunction.
Power Source Battery: Two 3 V (6 Volts) CR123A or DL 123A lithium batteries supplies power to body and built-in flash.
Battery Check: Battery level is displayed by the battery level indicator on the LCD panel. Battery level is indicated in one of four levels. Note: When the symbol blinks on the LCD, a picture can still be taken except it may not be enough to advance/rewind the film.

Dioptric Correction lens E: Attaching the eyepiece allows near or far sighted users to see the viewfinder image clearly without eyeglasses. The default is -1 diopter. There are 10 correction lenses for you to choose from. Eyepiece Extender EP-EX 15 moves the viewfinder frame back 15 mm from the camera body, giving a more comfortable clearance between the face and the back of the camera. Naturally, you can also make use other eyepiece accessories such as Angle Finder B for right angle viewing or low level shooting etc. GR-80TP Grip Extension features a built-in mini tripod, it screws to the tripod socket, giving a larger grip for the hand, plus a detachable hand strap. The Battery Power Pack BP-8 is both a battery pack as well as a vertical grip for the EOS-500 (usable with 500N and EOS-888/5000 too). It accepts 4 alkaline-manganese or rechargeable NiCd size AA battery cells. Exclusive accessories
The camera shares many system accessories that was introduced for the EOS 500. Remote Switch RS-60 E3 allows the camera to be fired from up to 60 cm away. It uses a 2.5 mm mini jack socket with three terminals. The Remote Switch is also usable with EOS-50, 500N and EOS 888/5000.
