Sensor Unit SU-2. The plug-in Sensor Unit SU-2 controls the operation of the SB- 11 Speedlight. It has five settings to choose from.
At the Auto Positions
To shoot on Auto, lift up and turn the knurled ring on the outside of the sensor to one of the three positions (orange yellow, or blue) which are colour-coded for use with the exposure calculator dial. At these settings, the SB-II is able to vary its light output automatically to match the flash-to-subject distance. At the S (Slave) Position
At this setting, the SB-11 emits a modulated burst of light which can trigger a second electronic flash. The remote flash unit is attached to the receiver portion of the optional Modulite Remote Control Unit ML-1I (which is set to Channel 2), while the SB- 11 Speedlight acts as the transmitter.
At the M (Manual) Position
Set the SU-2 to the M setting and the SB-11 operates manually at its maximum light output regardless of the flash-to-subject distance. In this case, you have to calculate the exposure manually by referring to the exposure calculator dial. See page 17 for more information.
Ready-Light
Built into the back of the SB-11's flash head is a ready light which comes on as soon as the speedlight is recycled and ready to fire.As an additional feature, the readylight blinks if the speedlight fires at its maximum output indicating that the light might be insufficient for correct exposure on Automatic. The warning blinks last for approximately two seconds.
Open-Flash Button
The red open-flash button is used to fire the speedlight manually without having to trip the camera's shutter. In this manner, you can create multiple-exposure "stroboscopic" effects or paint the scene with light by firing the speedlight repeatedly with the camera set to "B" or "T."The open-flash button is also used in conjunction with the ready-light to determine if you can get the correct exposure when shooting on Automatic.
This is especially useful when doing bounce flash. After setting up the shot, push the open-flash button. If the ready-light does not blink, you can take the picture. If it does blink, try moving the speedlight closer to the subject or bounce surface, or reset the Sensor Unit SU-2 to a colour-coded position calling for a wider aperture.
External Power Terminal
This terminal is for connection of a separate battery pack.
Sync/Multiple/Flash Sockets. Two standard Nikon screw-in type terminals are provided on the SB-11 Speedlight. Either terminal can be used to attach the Sync Cord SC-11, while the other is provided for connecting the SB- 11 with another speedlight in series for multiple flash operation.Sync Cord SC-11. This cord has standard Nikon connections at both ends for positive attachment of the SB-11 to a Nikon camera having a screw-in type sync terminal.

Can the SB-11 (SB-14, 140) work with modern Nikon autofocus SLRs ?
Why not ? For TTL flash with Nikon F4, F5, F100, F90X, F90, F70, F-601, F50 or APS SLRs like Pronea models with standard ISO type accessory shoe, use a SC-23 for TTL flash exposure control. For Non-TTL flash automatic flash, you can SC-13 for any Nikon flash with standard ISO hot shoe.* This camera doesn't have a sync terminal. To use the SB-11, you must attach the TTL Extension Cord SC-13. When you use the Photomic Finder, first detach it from the body and then set the sync selector to FX. The sync cord must be connected to the camera's X contact.
Some useful Accessories:
TTL Sensor Cord SC-12
One meter long, this cord allows the SB-11 to be used with the Nikon F3 for automatic through-the-lens control of the flash exposure.
When attached, the camera's shutter speed is automatically switched to the proper flash synchronization speed of 1/80 sec. with the shutter speed dial at A or 1/125 sec. and above. The ready-light inside the camera's viewfinder also operates in the normal manner.
For Non-TTL flash automatic flash, you can use the SC-13 for any Nikon flash with standard ISO hot shoe.
Sensor Remote Cord SC-13 Also one meter long, the SC-13 allows mounting of the SB-11's Sensor Unit SU-2 directly on popular Nikon bodies such as FA, FE-2, FM, FM2n, or FG, FG-20, EM's hot shoe for automatic, off-camera operation with the flash unit pointed in any direction. With the Nikon F3, the Flash Coupler AS-4 is required and control of the flash exposure is automatic, but not through-the-lens.
Sync Cord SC-15 A coiled cord over one meter in length, the SC-15 screws into the camera's sync terminal and allows the SB-11 to be detached from its bracket and used off-camera.
< SD-7 (Left); SD-8 (Above) The DC Unit SD-7 accepts six C-type batteries, and is designed as a separate power source for the SB-26, SB-27, SB-22, S13-20, SB- 11 and SB- 14.The Battery Pack SD-8 is designed for use with the SB-26, SB-27, SB-22, SB-20 and SB- I I to shorten flash recycling time and enhance flash capacity. It accepts six AA-type alkaline or NiCd batteries.
