Hello, I recently inherited two minolta cameras from my grandfather. One is a xd11
model, it is in fairly good condition, however, it needs a good cleaning. The screen
(I believe this is what it is called) appears to be scratched. I have had several
opinions that vary. Most have told me that the camera is not worth putting money
into. what is your opinion of the cameras value? I appreciate any help or insight
you could give me. The other camera is a minolta srT202 it is badly in need of repair.
the lens is stuck on the camera body and will not come off. When you look into the
view finder it is so badly scratched that you can barely see through it to focus
the lens. There is also what appears to be a bug stuck inside. This camera appears
to be newer and came with the original owners manual. What is your opinion of this
as far as value? Is it worth fixing, or do I have just nice artifacts to remember
my grand father? Sincerely, James Brady
From Anuar
Bin Ahmad (Tue Apr 10 15:24:04 2001 ):
Inherited an X-1 & XE-1 and a few set of lenses and a Nikon F from my father
some time back in '82. I've also added an X-700, X-GM & 9000 myself plus several
close-up accessories like AB-III and so on. Have used these cameras without any complain.
Lately I've been using the X-1 & XE-1 since mountain bike races were introduced
here. Normally I would cycle along with the racers and stop midway to photograph
the cyclists regardless of the condition of the tracks; be it dusty, wet or muddy
and the occasional shower. It has faired better than the more compact X-700 &
X-GM on the track even though they weighed more and I do miss the motor drive feature.
Even though covered with mud or dust, they functioned flawlessly. Dented the AE Finder;
the metering and AUTO has not been working since but still works full manual. I'm
trying to get the X-1 Motor.

Hi! Just came across your Minolta site and you all just reinforce something I have
known for years. I have a Minolta X-700 that I purchased in Viet Nam,'65 or '66 w/50mm
1.7 and 135mm lenses. After its initial flight out of a helicopter from 500 ft into
a rice paddy (and subsequent cleaning)it has performed remarkably well! I have been
trying to find another PowerGrip2 flash bracket attachment with no luck. Any ideas?
I was looking at some new models yesterday, and an old photog called over some younger
salesmen and remarked". . now this is what a REAL camera feels like!" Except
for AF, looks like my old box had all the features of todays cameras thirty years
ago. Keep in touch.
From Bert
Janssen (Sat Mar 31 19:28:53 2001 ):
I think it would appropriate to include the XD-5. After all, it is basically a XD-7/XD-11/XD,
only lacking some less essential features like the film advance indicator. Nevertheless
I strongly believe that users of a XD-7/XD-11/XD will always prefer it because it
has a more comprehensive viewfinder in terms of information about shutter speeds
and aperture. The only thing I miss in my XD-7 is the lack of TTL-flashmetering,
but that is why I also own a couple of X-700 bodies.
From Bert
Janssen (Sat Mar 31 07:42:51 2001 ):
To Ulrich: like the XM aka XK aka X1, the XD-7 aka XD-11 is/was also known as XD.
It just depends on which part of the world the body was meant for! There was also
a XD-S, which to my knowledge was only available in Japan; it has an adjustable eyepiece
for spectacle-wearers.
From Bert
Janssen (Sat Mar 31 07:35:53 2001 ):
Since I bougth my first Minolta (a black XD-7) in 1990 I am hooked on this brand!
I have owned several other bodies: SRT-100x, SRT-101, SRT-303, XE-1, XG-2, X-500
and 8000i (silly me; all that hassle with chipcards...); at moment I still have that
XD-7, along with two X-700´s, a SRT-303, XE-1 and two XM´s. The XD-7
and the XM´s are my favourites (the XE-1 is the predecessor of the XD-7 and
in fact a simplified XM) as they are very easy to handle, ruggedly built and very
reliable. They are also silent and smooth, compared to cameras of other manufacturers
(don´t want to hurt your feelings, Nikon-buffs; but really, what is so good
about a Nikon...); after years of using screw-mount cameras I was looking for a bayonet-mount
camera and I had several options: Canon A-1, Nikon FA, Fuji AX-5 or Minolta XD-7.
In the end I have made the best choice I could! For those Leica-lovers: if you want
a data-back for your R4, but cannot afford the Leica original, get yourself a Minolta
Data Back D. It will fit snugly on your R4! And for a fraction of the price! If anyone
wants to know: notwithstanding other statements (even from Minolta Co.), the XD-7
does work with all manual focus lenses, be it Auto-Rokkor, MC-Rokkor, MD-Rokkor or
just Rokkor; and is capable of shutterspeeds of approx. 60 seconds to 1/2300 of a
second in auto-mode! Only the display in the viewfinder will not come on when lenses
without MD-coupling lug are used. The right designation for the mount is SR; MD an
MC just indicate which meter-coupling capabilities the lens has.

While Pawn shopping one day in 1996 I found an XD-11 for $65.00 in Mint condition....I
find it quite the special piece of equipment. My lens repertoir is centered around
my macro training as a microfilmer for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
I was trained in 1974 and bought my first Minolta macro 50-QL preset lens at another
pawn shop in Pocatello, ID for $25.00. Now my system includes Auto bellows III and
a 50mm F:3.5 Macro Minolta Auto-MD and an F:2.5 Tokina Macro 90mm. All my lenses
resolve at over 80-LPM wide open, leading me to believe that one need not pay higher
prices for a Major MFG. name lens to get the same quality optically than an off named
lens manuacturer's lens. Since then I have purchased a Sigma 400 F:5.6, Tokina 80-200
ATX F:2.8, and a jewel of an SMZ Tokina 35-70 F:3.5 All my lenses are exceptional
in sharpness and have been scrutenized by the lens repairman at Tokina, and certified
that they are above average and in most cases equal to or better that Prime lenses
from the top five camera makers lenses of equal magnification ratios. He actually
has stated his professional opinion in just how sharp my outfit is!! To make a final
point on my lenses abilities...I took a picture of a friend's Postal Stamp from the
Marshall Islands. This one that he picked I shot with two colors as background....one
pink, and the other background blue. Both pictures were fantastic except for the
little piece of lint on the blue background stamp's photo....I not only caught the
piece of lint, but two shadows under the lint its self! I was shooting 25ASA Royal
Gold....with matched Vivitar 285 flashes. The saturation of the lens was fantastic
and I still can't decide which macro lens I was using at that time because they both
are equally sharp and contrasty! Now back to my camera....I love the Vertical Focal
plane as It allows me to take faster wedding flash photos with less blur during dancing
and activities since the sincro is at 125th of a second. I've been a Minolta nut
since purchasing my first SRT-100 in 1971, and gave up on Pentax screw mount lenses.
I even had a beater lens by Lentar that was wobbley in the helicoid but was needle
sharp optically! But I still won't hesitate for a moment to pick up a Rokkor if the
price is right and the pawn shop is easy! HA HA!

Owning a XM, I can say that it is a beautyful, rare and exotic camera, but it does
not fullfill professional demands. The main problem is, that you can´t rely
on the metering. Having checked the camera more than one time by a authorized repairman,
I still have my doubts in the correct functions of the electric parts of the camera:
Sometimes the metering works, sometimes it doesn´t. Sometimes it even works,
when it shouldn´t, which wastes the batteries enourmously. I can imagine, that
these problems are the reason why professional photographers got not familiar with
th xm, and prefered a Nikon or Canon.

Stahrlinger (Sat Oct 14 08:42:10 2000 ):
Hi, I just had the chance to buy an XD-7 at a very reasonable price. The reason for
the price being a few glitches in its computer system. Namely, the camera "forgetting"
the ASA-setting at 100 ASA and simply showing the overexposure-arrow. The second
and more serious issue is the camera's inability to set the aperture in "S"-mode
even with Minolta's own MD-series lenses - the camera simply keeps setting the correct
exposure time for the aperture set - the one marked in green. This might however
simply be caused by a corroded or loose contact in the mode selector as there's a
definite "catch" when switching from "A" to "S". I
was wondering if anyone has experienced this problem before and could give me some
hints on how to solve this. Also, I'd be very grateful if anyone has a scan of the
repair manual for the XD-7/11 they could send me - many thanks in advance.
