Nikon Autofocus (AF) Nikkor 70-300mm f/4~5.6D non-ED telephoto zoom lens Introduced: unknown; This lens was previously unknown in its existence; a non-ED version of 70-300mm f/4~5.6D version. A gentleman Mr Michael Rhodes email: <stoker98@btinternet.com> mailed in his finding to furnish the AF Nikkor zoom lens group section, Thanks, Mike.
Best guess it was a version that was introduced mid between the period during Ai-S and ED version.

Hello,
May I say first how valuable I find your site as a source of information about Nikon lenses and cameras. I always look at it first if I encounter an unusual piece of kit, and usually you have something useful to say. On this occasion, however, I was unable to find any information about a lens that I bought recently. It is the same as the lens shown here:
http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=540402; It is a 70-300mm f4-5.6 D lens (but lacks the ED designation).
It looks like the ED version and according to the new Zealand serial number website, it has the same number of lens elements &c. and it weighs the same. But it lacks the gold lettering. It does have a metal mount, which suggests it is a better quality lens than the G version of the 70-300mm. I have been trying to find out if it is an early version of the ED lens. I am wondering if it is exactly the same as the ED lens, but was distributed before the ED designation was added, perhaps as a marketing ploy.
On trying it out, I have found it generally very sharp. I do not have a G lens to compare it with, but my impression is that it’s a little bit better than the G lens — which would support the idea it is an ED lens before it was branded as such. I thought you might like to know about the existence of this lens, and I would be very grateful for any comments you might have. Best Regards, and good luck with your wonderful website.
Michael
