EOS RT
film-based AF-SLR camera, 1989 ~ 1992

Canon Autofocus EF Lens Resources

The "RT" stands for "real-time". The Canon EOS RT was the first autofocus SLR camera that employed with a hard coated fixed pellicle mirror inside (the mirror specification & performance is the SAME with the 10 fps flagship Canon EOS-1n RS introduced later in 1995). The deployment of the fixed Pellicle Mirror has drastically shortened the shutter-release time lag and provide a series of advantages never experienced by photographers who used convention reflex mirror type of camera. However, prior to the use of this for the EOS RT, Canon was no stranger to the Pellicle Mirror as early as 1972, the Company has already developed a fixed mirror high speed motor drive camera for the Olympic Games at Sapporo. The original Canon F1 High Speed Motor Camera was again improved with the Canon New F-1 High Speed Motor Drive camera for the 1984's Olympic games in Los Angeles. Besides, even the EARLIER consumer grade Canon Pellix of 1965, Canon has already been deploying with similar concept of a fixed mirror 35mm camera, except that it does not support high speed film advances.

Well, entering the Autofocus era, the EOS RT delivers a different level of operating ease in functionality. In most cases, the user may not even feel the activation of this function as light depressing the shutter button halfway will readies the camera for instant picture-taking. But unlike conventional SLRs which may take approx. 90-130 millisecond to complete an exposure, the RT takes only 0.008 sec. for the shutter's first curtain to open and the second curtain to close after exposing the film. The elimination of the action of the reflex mirror/shutter curtain actions also brought a benefit - it has enabled a fast continuous shooting speed of 5.0 fps, even when shooting in predictive AI Servo AF. Other than the shooting speed and handling the EOS RT also provides many essential professional features such as auto bracketing, multiple exposures, six AE modes and metered manual, and equipped with 15 Custom Functions for the photographer to custom setup the camera to cater for personal preferences and/or each particular type of assignment.

PELLICLE MIRROR The main highlight of this camera was the incorporation of the Pellicle Mirror - otherwise, it was like a standard Canon EOS 630 model. With the special, fixed mirror, the camera has these advantages:- You can actually observe the exact moment "during" exposure as the camera's viewfinder never flip upwards. A higher film advance shooting sequence rate was achieved due to virtually no mechanical movement other than the open and close of shutter curtain and merely 0.8 millisecond time lag. One of the more practical application was when using the camera of this type for shooting macro-photography, scientific research and/or others such as astro-photography, the indirect elimination of any possible mirror bounce that might contribute to blurry image especially at slow speed shooting permit wide photographic applications such as engineering studies on motion analysis. It is like a full-time mirror lock -up isn't it ? For those who always works with strobes or multi-flash setup, the constant viewing actually permits you to see the light source striking on the subject during exposure. The Pellicle Mirror will be featured more at the Canon EOS-1n RS site.
