RefIex-Nikkor 1000mm f/11

The first reflex Nikkor was not designed for the SLRs. Instead, a Reflex-Nikkor 1000mm f6.3 was Nikon first catadiaptric (Mirror) lens designed for the Nikon S series of rangefinder cameras. So, was the 500mm f5 the first Reflex Nikkor at 500mm ?

The gigantical Reflex Nikkor 2000mm f11 - the longest commercial production focal length of Mirror lens for 35mm SLR photography. It was first introduced in 1972, where at the same time, the widest angles among all - the Fisheye Nikkor 6mm f2.8 was introduced at the same year.
The 1000mm Mirror lens here present some photographic objectives. It may not be a everyday lens, but just like any Reflex lenses, it possess some optical characteristic on its own.

ï Extremely narrow 2°30' picture angle produces spectacular 20X magrufication of the subject (when compared with a normal lens).
ï Dramatic images are possible in sports, wildlife, travel and astrophotography.
ï Catadioptric (mirror) design eliminates chromatic aberration for outstanding picture quality.
ï Very compact and light for its long focal length.
ï Detachable focusing handle with two screw-in positions allows rapid focusing down to a close 8m (25 ft.).
ï Telescopic lens hood.
ï Built-in tripod socket collar rotates 360°, allowing quick change from horizontal- to vertical-format shooting without tripod adjustment.
ï Supplied with a set of five 39mm rear screw-in filters (ultraviolet, light amber, light blue, orange, and 4X neutral density).

You must have thought the 1000mm f11 Reflex-Nikkor was a big 'Bazooka" as compared with the 500mm f8. We are so used to the 500mm f8, 1000mm f11 'standard' aperture formula. But as the unusual large aperture 500mm f5 mentioned earlier, Nikon did produced a 3 elements but a 2 feet monster optic weighing 22 pounds 1000mm f6.3 Reflex lens for their 35mm rangefinder series camera during the late '50. Well, you can still mount the lenses designed specifically for the Nikon rangefinder camera to the Nikon F-mount SLRs with an accessory by mounting the N-F tube.

It has a built-in bellows focusing mechanism operated by a thumb-wheel which allowed for very smooth, and light focusing. It came with a grey metal carrying case and the entire outfit weighs nearly 30 pounds!
