A photo of the World famous, historical Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon, Myanmar (Rangoon, Burma)

Pictures & Photos of some selective Buddhist Temples & Pagodas in the capital city of Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar.(Burma)

Burma (renamed as Myanmar in 1988), bordering the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, between Bangladesh and Thailand. It was directly ruled by the British for about 62 years (roughly from 1824-1886) and was annexed under the East Indian empire until the Japanese came in during the Second World War. The country achieved independence in 1948 in a series of British ruled colonies that seek for self dependence within the Commonwealth countries that can spread across from Asia to Africa. Due to its geographical locations and colonized state, Burma has a mixed a cultures, religions a mixed with its own unique custom and practices Politically, the county was governed in modern times by military (the most prominent figure was the late General Newin from 1962-1988). The country is still under military rule and has raised many political questions ambits definitions of democracy and ancient method of control.

I am not particularly interested in political issues but would also like to take advantage of the creation of this site to let you understand some background and ancient history that may affect the state of development of Buddhism in the current Myanmar - an essential political component in the ASEAM neighborhood. This site hosts some pictures & photos of some temples that I visited during a week long business trip in 2005. Update: 2006, the New Capital city of Myanmar will be Nay Pi Taw - according to sources, a relica of the Shewdagon with a slighter shorter height will be constructed at the new administrative capital.
