  2. From Michael Richey (Tue Feb 29 23:58:23 2000 ):
My Nikkormat EL was stolen in a burglary at my appartment. Can anybody give me some idea of what the replacement cost would be? I was given the camera as a gift years ago. Thanks, Michael in Memphis

  3. From JWoods (Mon Feb 28 13:14:50 2000 ):
#Chuck Magers# No. The Nikkormat FT-3 does not provide a user interchangeable focusing screen feature. However, that can be done with either factory service or experienced technician outside. The first non-F series model that has the feature is the Nikon FE in 1978.

  4. From Chuck Magers (Sun Feb 27 07:18:39 2000 ):
Nikkormat FT3 Can anyone tell me whether or not I can change the focal screen in my FT3? thanks

  5. From barbara Hallman (Mon Feb 21 08:23:16 2000 ):
Hi. Me again. I found the battery casing in my Nikkormat EL, by reading the tech info provided with this site. Thanks for the information. I NEVER would have looked under that mirror; in fact I take great pains never to touch it! Anyway, I boldly dug the battery out, and now can anyone tell me how to find the 6 volt No. 544 silver oxide battery???

  6. From Barbara Hallman (Mon Feb 21 07:41:02 2000 ):
Hi. I love my old, trusty Nikkormat EL. The light meter is not working and I suspect a dead battery (last one inserted in 1991!) Does anyone know how to find the battery compartment? The folks at the Ritz camera shop couldn't find where the battery(ies)would go...so I asked them if they could send it to the shop for new batteries. Seems Ritz would like me to commit to a $125 potential service fee just for someone to find the battery casing. Help please!

  7. From Bill Thompson (Fri Feb 11 02:02:08 2000 ):
I have a Nikkormat EL and would like to know if there is any way I can get a copy of the instruction manual. The original has been lost.

  8. From Jerry G. (Thu Feb 10 11:01:27 2000 ):
I was given an old 1970 Nikomat SLR camera. It's in great shape but with no original owners manual I don't have the proper specs on the kind of battery it uses. With so many owners I am sure this is not a hard question. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

  9. From M. Gonzales (Wed Feb 2 05:29:36 2000 ):
FYI. I have just had some repairs on my Nikomat FT (circa 1965) at "Apollo Camera" in Sunnyvale CA, (located about 40 miles south of San Francisco) USA (Tel. 408 733 0933). The repairs consisted of cleaning, adjusting the shutters, replacing the light seals, fixing the light meter, adjusting meter for 1.5v batteries, and converting the viewing screen to a split screen. I thought I would mention the above repairs, since the question of repairing Nikormat (or Nikomat) cameras comes up every so often.

  13. From David Armstrong (Sun Jan 16 10:25:51 2000 ):
I have a couple of questions about using a flash with a Nikomat FT. I'm using a Honeywell Strobonar 100M flash. First, question: I assume I have to set the shutter speed to "B," is that correct? Second: Do I attach the PC cord to the "M" or the "X" on the side of the camera? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. Much appreciated.

  14. From Walker (Wed Jan 5 07:07:34 2000 ):
I also have a Nikkormat FTN that will not meter. My dad purchased it 8/72 and passed away a few years later. I have just received it from my mom. I changed the battery and took it to a camera repair shop with no help. Can this be fixed? I use a hand held meter now for odd lighting, but that's a pain...

Have a Nikkormat EL that will not let me focus...I am an ameteur with this camera and when I try to set the distance in feet, I cannot get the green or the black lines for the shutter to move. 19. From Jamie (Wed Dec 29 07:05:02 1999 ):
I have a 1968 +/- Nikkormat FTN that will not meter. I would greatly appreciate any guidance or recommendations which could be provided. I have been told by a service tech that more than likely the brushes are bad. Is this a reasonable answer to the fact that it will not meter? I have very little technical knowledge regarding camera repair. Could the brushes be cleaned. Is it possible to find used parts or damaged bodies which could be used for cannibalizing parts. My FTN is in new condition and I can't accept the fact that it's dead. Thanks in advance for any assistance or help.

  20. From Geoffrey Bell (Tue Dec 28 06:13:23 1999 ):
I'm looking for a shop manual or an assembly drawing of a Nikkormat FTN, vintage 1971. Does anyone know where I can purchase this kind of manual or drawing?

  21. From kbchan (Tue Dec 21 16:43:26 1999 ):
Can anyone tell me the year of production of my Nikomat camera serial number FT 4409175. I bought it for about US 250 when I was in Osaka recently. It is in almost mint condition and came with case, a flash unit mount and a 50mm Nikkor-S Auto 1:1.4 lens. If it's of any help to those looking for batteries for their Nikkormat, the camera is fitted with a Varta V625U battery (made in Germany) which I believe is alkaline. I think alternatives are EPX 625 made by Union Carbide and PX 625A. However, the voltage of these batteries are 1.5V instead of 1.3V. Thanks.

  22. From Harvey Phillips (Mon Dec 20 20:06:26 1999 ):
Tried to take off the top cover of my Nikkormat EL with the intentions of resoldering a disconnected flash wire. Never could figure out how to get the top off. But now I have a lot of little parts and screws and I can't puzzle out how to reassemble. Is there any place on-line that I can find a schematic?

  23. From Dave W (Sat Dec 18 04:14:09 1999 ):
I have one of the 1972 model Nikkormat FTN cameras and the shutter mechanism no longer trips the shutter. I am trying to find a place where I can get the shutter repaired. Any information will be helpful as all the camera shops I have tried in the Northwest USA are unable to help.

  24. From Bruce Fonda (Fri Dec 10 11:42:52 1999 ):
I have a Nikkormat EL and need a 6 volt battery to use the exposure and shutter speeds. Can I purchase this battery at a local camera shop or is this battery a special type ? The shutter still operates at 1/90 of a sec. Manual over-ride. Any information would be greatly appreaciated.

  25. From JWoods (Mon Dec 6 11:16:22 1999 ):
#nova#: You have to specify which particular Nikkormat model and what are the 'version' of lenses currently you are owning so as to allow others to answer your posting more precisely. Basically, if ALL your lenses (Including those that comes with the Nikon FE at Ebay has a meter coupling shoe on top of the lens, that should be fine to be used with either electronic FE or any of the Nikkormat models. However, IF your current lenses are of the Non-AI type, you can only use stopped down metering and not the full aperture metering method with the Nikon FE. Nevertheless, good news is: Both ways are still compatible. There is a pretty detailed section in this site to help you determine various types of Nikkor lenses (AI, AI'd, AI-S or even Pre-AI types). By the way, if your Nikkormat is a Nikon EL2 or Nikkormat FT-3 which both were among the first batch of Nikon AI bodies, then it should retain full compatibility between lenses and cameras.

Hello. I have a Nikkormat FT and I´m looking for a battery. I believe the mercury is no longer aviable. Can I use alkaline instead? Is ther anyone out there who´s got a copy of the manual for me? I live in Sweden.

  27. From Glenn (Sat Dec 4 13:47:24 1999 ):
I was hiking and I dropped my Nikkormat into some dark, deep, very dirty (salty) water....Wow, my light meter works again!!! I mthink i may have found a cure for dead meters!!! Gee, thank you god...

  28. From Dave (Sat Dec 4 10:14:58 1999 ): could you tell me about The EM series that is done by Nikon please

  29. From Jeff Wessel (Fri Dec 3 12:45:12 1999 ):
Hi all, I just purchased a Nikkormat EL and I want to know if this camera requires the use of AI lenses or if I can use non-AI lenses and still have full aperture metering and automation. The Non-AI lenses seem to cost about half as much. Thanks in Advance

  30. From Lars (Thu Dec 2 18:18:50 1999 ):
Tim! - No this is not true! The EL couples via the METER COUPLING PIN of the camera and the METER COUPLING SHOE (MCS) of the lens (this last one is also called "rabbit ears", "crab claws" or "hog nose"). Most pre-AI as well as AI and AI-S lenses has an MCS. Nikon Series E and AF lenses in general do not. It can be fitted in many cases though! You can couple a lens without the MCS but the full aperture metering is disabled - you can use stop down metering in stead or a handheld meter.

  31. From Tim Phillips (Thu Dec 2 12:13:05 1999 ):
I have had an Nikkormat EL for some time, and greatly enjoyed it but never purchased any additional lenses, and now would like to purchase some. My understanding is that this model only takes NON-AI lenses. It this true?? It came with a 50MM,and I would a zoom lense and a wide angle lens. Where is the best place to obtain lenses of all sizes, top quality only. Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. appreciated!!!!!

I had just purchased a Nikomat FTN while I was in Japan for about US250.It is in quite a good condition and came with a case and flash attachment.. Could someone please tell me the year of production of this camera. The serial number is FT 4409175. The lens is a Nikkor-S Auto f1.1:1.4. I have a Nikon FG with a Nikkor 35-105 zoom lens. Is this lens compatible with the Nikomat ?.Comparing these two cameras I think the Nikomat is much better built and handled better. Would appreciate it very much if anyone can recommend a flash for this camera. Thanks.

  34. From N. Joe (Sun Nov 28 02:00:55 1999 ):
I have a 1971 FTn that has never been serviced. Europe, mountains, deserts; it has been a faithful companion. Should I have it "tuned-up"? One source says: "If it isn't broken, don't touch it." Also, I like that Nikkor 43-86mm zoom. What's the going price (used) for such a lens? BTW - great site!! N. Joe

  35. From david (Sat Nov 27 10:56:23 1999 ):
Help. I have a Nikkormat FT2 and the light meter works erratically despite two thorough camera servicings. Sometimes it works perfectly and other times it flickers on and off especially as I change shutter speeds or diaphragm openings. Any thoughts? Thanks. David

  36. From JWoods (Wed Nov 24 09:58:04 1999 ):
The EL will take any flash that has a standard ISO flash foot. You need not have to purposely buy a Nikon flash unit for that purpose although some older units like SB-10 (Guide number 25), the newer SB-15 (With bounce and tilt, manual, auto + TTL (But not applicable to the EL for the TTL function) and it even has a MD (Rapid firing, but since EL does not has a provision to work with a Winder or motor drive, this feature provided is not practical for the EL). Smaller Nikon flash like the SB-7 can also be used (Avoid any flash models that fits the F, Nikon F2 or the F3, which may require a seperate Flash coupler in order to use with the EL). Third party flash units are cheaper and even more practical in terms of support. Sunpak and Vivitar has some compact but very functional flash models and generally has AUTO and Manual mode which is perfect to use along with the EL. Another thing, the PC terminal next to the lens mount will even allow the use of older flash that uses flash cable - most of such units should be very economical in the used market.

I have a Nikomat FTn black body which I purchased in 1969 in Misawa, Japan. It still takes high quality photos given today's new cameras. My strobe flash gave out several years ago, and am in need of a new one. Can someone recommend a good quality strobe flash that will control exposure so I won't have to reset my camera aperture each time I change ranges? Thanks.

I have a cherry EL with set of lenses, which I use for everything from portraiture to weddings to snapshots. A couple of nights ago, I had it tripod mounted to photo the moon with my 2X and 200 mm zoom. I took one shot, and when I wound it, it acted like the roll was done. I changed rolls, and found the roll was not done. However, the shutter was locked solid. No play or give or anything when pressed. I tried the rewind button, took out the film and tried winding the sprocket by hand, nothing made any difference. The meter works, the battery is OK, everthing is OK. Any ideas? How can I unfreeze my shutter? ( Timer doesn't trip it, either ) Thanks in advance. Larry Carttar lcarttar@inter-linc.net

Bonjour from Montreal: I discovered this web site while surfing the net looking for photo and camera sites. I have owned and used several Nikon cameras over the years. My first purchase was a Nikkormat FS sometime in 1967. This Nikon camera has served me well in travels all over the world. Built like a tank and its weight is heavy, but its very stable camera and takes great pictures. While it has no metering, I found it a great camera because it made me work hard at taking good pictures. Love Nikon cameras.

  46. From Debbie Cramer (Wed Sep 22 10:01:31 1999 ):
I recently "lucked out" at a thrift store in Alaska and bought a FT2 Nikkormat. It has a 50mm lens but I see that this type (or age) of camera has a coupling pin and slotted prong on the aperture ring. I would like to get other lenses for this camera but think this may be a problem. Must I get only older Nikkor lenses? What other brands will fit this camera? Any one know what kind of prices I will be paying? Would like all the info you might give. The camera and lens was purchased for $20 and works great! So, I have money to spare for lenses. I think this is a lucky find.
