Finders for the current Nikon F5

F5 Viewfinder Display.jpg

At least those guys at Nikon meeting room still know what we want. The finder info is much better organized and neatly arranged than the F4. Despite the mind boggling features that are available with the F5, the finder info display is kept very simple and not offensive. Perhaps the large body integrated LCD panel has diluted some info relative to camera operations. Since F5 can "custom" tune your personal preference on variable metering areas (The only SLR camera on the market that provide with such feature), the center 12mm dia circle is still retained for seasoned Nikon fans to act as a guide.

The biggest bonus Nikon gave to F5 users is the DP-30 finder which is made of titanium (That is why I said, it was very generous move indeed). Why a Titanium finder ? I have seen many "smash & dented" Nikons (Especially at the service center at Shiro Malaysia for the last 15 years), 50% were happened at finders... most of them still work perfectly on the camera, despite those seemingly irreparable condition shown - this has make me feel more appreciative for an interchangeable finder system in a Nikon - at least it is not going to be that painful for the pocket to change a whole new set of camera because of a damaged prism ...(just in case I am next).

As with the
Multi-meter prism DP-20 of the F4, various control of the F5 relative to its metering options (Matrix, spot and center-weighted) can be selected with the metering selector. If you want to picky, the recent announced 50th Anniversary F5's Multi-meter prism has a slight difference with the regular DP-30. The type face inscribed on the front of the prism with the name "Nikon" is similar with the Nikon I in 1948.

Interchangeable Viewfinders

The standard Multi-Meter Finder is interchangeable with three other optional viewfinders, all of which offer virtually 100% frame coverage.

Multi-Meter Finder DP-30

High-Eyepoint type. Incorporates a built-in dioptre adjustment knob (-3 to +1 dioptres), ISO-standard accessory shoe, eyepiece shutter and metering system selector.

AE Action Finder DA-30

High-Eyepoint type (approx. 60mm). Ideal when normal viewing is difficult or impossible, such as when wearing a helmet or goggles, or when the camera is encased in a special housing for underwater photography.

6x High-Magniflcation Finder DW-31

For critical high-magnification close-up work and photomicrography. The sophisticated optical system provides a clear, sharp view of the entire image at approximately 6x magnification. Fitted with a -5 to +3 adjustment for individual eyesight correction. Rubber eyecup and rubber eyepiece cap are provided.

Waist-Level Finder DW-30

For use when the F5 is positioned at a low angle or on a copystand. Fold-up type viewing hood provided. The built-in flip-up magnifier provides an approx. 5x magnification at the center of the image for accurate focusing.

The chart below shows the combination of
viewfinders and metering systems operative.
