Three Early Canon FD Zoom Lenses - Canon Lens FD 35-70mm f/2.8-3.5 S.S.C.; Canon Lens FD 100-200mm f/5.6 S.C.; Canon Lens FD 85-300mm f/4.5 S.S.C.

In the field, a good photographer oftens needs special effects or techniques to perfectly capture the essence of a special subject. In doing so, he will need to change focal lengths often including deeper or shallow zone of depth-of-field and the choice of using exaggeration or compressed perspectives.

NOTE:- Info on the NEWER autofocus version

Doing all these with fixed focal length lenses are not feasible especially when time is of priority. This is where zoom lenses can provide these effects instantly because their flexible focal lengths can accommodate a wide variation of image presentation.

Canon's zoom lens series includes: the FD 35-70mm f/2.8 - 3.5 S.S.C., the FD 100 - 200mm f/5.6 S.C., and the FD 85 - 300mm f/4.5 S.S.C. Zoom lenses found in this series are particularly well suited for shooting on an impulse, for capturing moving subjects, and when an alternation of overall and close-up shots is necessary.
Canon Lens FD 35-70mm f/2.8-3.5 S.S.C. Introduced in December 1973. The FD 35-70mm f/2.8-3.5 S.S.C. was an ideal general lens for a good variety of effects, from wide-angle to moderate telephoto. It was specially designed to correct for all aberrations, eliminating distortion and field curvature. This superbly constructed lens can also perform close-up photography to a distance of 30cm (1 ft) from the film plane when using the FD 35-70mm's built-in macro-shooting capacity. Canon engineers consider this lens one of the finest zoom lenses they have ever made. When the FDn replaced the older types, this lens was still offered in the new series.

Canon Lens FD 100-200mm f/5.6 S.C. This is a small, lightweight zoom lens for photographing scenery and for snapshot shooting. Because of various aberration compensations i.e., distortion and spherical aberration, sharpness and contrast are very high and superior image definition is obatined. To facilitate convenient operation, its zoom ratio is 1:2. Because of its speed in operation, it is a perfect lens for sports. The FDn type came treated with S.S.C. and was lighter by 155 grammes.

" ... The FD 85-300mm f/4.5 S.S.C. is a telephoto lens which offers a quite extraordinary range of focal lengths. Although it has a minimum focusing distance of 2.5 meters, it can also zoom in on subjects which are very far away. This can mean excellent shots of people, animals, sporting events, or other distant action. The FD 85-300mm feautures a large maximum aperture to assure the clearest, brightest image possible. The 85-300 mm lens, has an impressive zoom ratio of 3.5x. Furthermore, despite its 300mm focal length, which is usually the limit that can be used for handheld shooting, the handling is superb where portability and handling are concerned.

At 300mm, the angle-of-view is 1/4 at 85mm with the 35mm frame covering an area that is 1/16 of the area covered by an 85 mm lens. That is to say, a subject that covers 1/16 of the frame at 85mm will fill the entire frame at 300 mm. The lens will take you from the natural image reproduction of 85mm focal length to the tremendous compression of perspective and narrow angle of the telephoto effect that is synonymous with the 300mm range. It is a manual focus Canon FD Mount Lens designed for the Canon A1, AE-1, AE-1Program, T90, T70, T50, AT-1, F1, FTb etc. This superb quality lens is often highly regarded as the older, better series of Canon FD Lenses using the chrome metal breech-lock mount and S.S.C (Super Spectra Coating)...." - Nathan Taylor aka Nata Lukas <http://www.natalukas.com/photop/index.htm> from KB camera@Ebay.com
